Turku
One of the oldest cities in Finland, history-steeped Turku is packed with medieval treasures, period architecture and fascinating museums.

One of Turku’s strongest appeals is the palpable sense of the past you experience in the city’s historic center. Medieval monuments sit alongside stunning warships and diverse museums in the heart of a city said to be Finland’s oldest. Discover the other sides of Turku, however, by dining in trendy restaurants, browsing modern art galleries and roaming across its spectacular archipelago.

Wander around the historic center of the town to learn about the city’s colorful past. The city started out as a 12th-century trading post and became a bishopric in 1229. Explore the twin landmarks of Turku Castle and Turku Cathedral, which are among the most important monuments in the city.

Spend your days visiting the other attractions in Turku’s center. The Forum Marinum is a fascinating maritime museum that includes a fleet of historic ships bobbing on the river. Stop by the Pharmacy Museum and the Qwensel House for an entertaining insight into the history of medicine. Other sights include the vast Market Hall, built in 1896, and the beautiful, expansive City Library.

Enjoy Turku’s thriving arts scene. The Aboa Vetus and Ars Nova displays changing exhibitions of contemporary art alongside a permanent exhibit documenting life in the Convent Quarter of the city. Marvel at some of Finland’s greatest artistic treasures in the Turku Art Museum, housed in an eye-catching granite building.

Turku is also a gateway to the surrounding islands, which number over 20,000. Follow the Archipelago Trail around the nearest islands. Voyage as far as Nagu, known for its harbor restaurants and a maritime museum. Archipelago National Park features hiking trails, tranquil fishing spots and canoeing opportunities.

Turku is well connected to Northern Europe. Fly into the international airport from major cities in Latvia and Sweden, as well as Helsinki, or take a boat into the harbor from Stockholm. Once here, travel around the city using the public transportation or on foot. Day tickets allow you unlimited access to the buses that travel around the city.

Come to Turku in summer for sunny days exploring the archipelago or to wander around the atmospheric city center.
