Trento featuring skyline and heritage architecture
Famed for its art and architecture, this bike-friendly medieval city sits nestled amid a valley of vineyards and surrounded by soaring Dolomite peaks.

Set out on foot or rent a bike and explore the architecturally-impressive streets of Trento. Discover a wealth of medieval and Renaissance monuments framed by a backdrop of striking mountain ranges. Experience a mix of Italian and Austrian culinary influences and go wine tasting at nearby bodegas.

Start your tour at Piazza del Duomo, a resplendent square lined with palazzos and pavement cafés. Check out the Baroque Fountain of Neptune and admire the medieval frescoes on display inside Cathedral of San Vigilio. Streets fan out like a spider’s web from the square, passing arcades, courtyards and frescoed mansions such as Casa Cazuffi-Rella. Visit religious landmarks, including the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and 12th-century San Lorenzo Abbey.

Learn about Trento’s ancient history at the city’s galleries and museums. Spot ecclesiastical paintings at the Tridentino Diocesan Museum and 19th and 20th-century art at the Museum of  Modern and Contemporary Art of Trento and Rovereto. Have fun with interactive exhibits at the MUSE science museum. Browse the art and archaeology displays in the halls of Castello del Buonconsiglio.

Travel below street level to see the remains of a Roman-era city at the Sass Underground Archaeological Space. Relax in the peaceful confines of the public garden or ride a cable car to a lookout point at Belvedere di Sardagna.

Trento’s dining and drinking options range from Austrian-style beerhalls to cafés that specialize in apple strudel and Italian trattorias. Join guided tours of wineries situated a short drive from the city center.

Very Italian in its unique way. Very nice, although eating out is not what it used to be, but this is a global phenomenon. Globalization, hoards of foreign tourists, and the fast food industry have destroyed ethnic cuisine. But I'll go back anytime.
