Relax on the shores of Lake Garda in this charming little town, which has an abundance of personality, history, ancient architecture and natural beauty.
Torri del Benaco is one of the prettiest spots on Lake Garda. Olive groves surround it, tumbling down to meet the calm waters of the lake. The town is filled with impressive ancient architecture and traditional restaurants. Spend your days wandering the medieval streets of the Old Town, set off on picturesque hikes through forests, enjoy watersports on the lake or simply relax along the shoreline.
The town’s history dates back to the Roman times, yet most structures you’ll see today are fine examples of architecture from the 14th to 18th centuries. Head to the small harbour, the heart of the town. Here find the most important buildings, mainly the impressive 14th-century Scaliger Castle. Appreciate the grandeur of the fortification before heading into the museum, which brings to life the traditional skills of freshwater fishing and olive production. Peek inside the hothouse to see old lemon trees filled with blossoms or fruit.
The Old Town is surrounded by ancient walls and towers, adding to its charm. In the vicinity of the Old Town and the port you will also find the 14th-century Palazzo del Consiglio della Gardesana, today a hotel. Adjacent to it is the Church of the Holy Trinity whose frescoes are quite interesting. Discover, too, the Santi Pietro e Paolo Church, with its 18th-century organ as well as the Torre del Comun clock tower.
Several smaller villages nestled in the landscape actually make up Torri del Benaco. Hike to the hilltop Albisano for panoramic views of Lake Garda, walk through olive groves toward Crero and see the remains of a great fortress at Pai. Make time to explore Pai’s fascinating Grotte La Tanella caves as well.
Torri del Benaco is located 28 miles (45 kilometres) from Verona, about a 1-hour drive. A train also stops at nearby Peschiera. Sail across the beautiful lake aboard a ferry to explore the western shore.
