Châlons-en-Champagne (Marne). La Porte Sainte-Croix et le Castel Marie-Antoinette. Porte Sainte-Croix. Egalement appelée porte Dauphine, la porte Sainte-Croix a été édifiée en 1771 par l'architecte Nicolas Durand et le sculpeteur Antoine Lépine. Elle est dédiée à Marie-Antoinette pour son arrivée en France avant son mariage avec le Dauphin, le futur Louis XVI. Cette porte, construite sur le modèle des arcs de triomphe romains, fut terminée juste à temps pour le passage de Marie-Antoinette, qui allait épouser le Dauphin, d’où son nom de Porte Dauphine. Le Castel Marie-Antoinette. Le Castel Marie Antoinette est un hôtel particulier néogothique qui fut construit en 1890 par M.Eugène Napoléon-Cochery pour sa fille Isabelle Marie-Antoinette. Ce petit château a été mis au enchères en février 2018, son propriétaire, homme d’affaires rémois, étant en délicatesse avec sa banque. Mis à prix pour 500 000 €, pour la moitié de son prix réel, la vente sera finalement annulée, le propriétaire ayant trouvé un arrangement avec sa banque. Un projet d'hôtel, avec des aménagements pour 3 millions d'€, ne fait pas l'unanimité.
Châlons-en-Champagne (Marne) Église Saint-Jean (église Saint-Jean Baptiste). L'église Saint-Jean est l'un des édifices les plus anciens de la ville. Une première chapelle, bâtie sur l'initiative du premier évêque de Châlons (Saint-Memmie) aurait occupé le site qui était alors en dehors de la cité. Construite de la fin du XIe siècle jusqu'au XVIIe siècle, l'église actuelle permet d'observer l'évolution de l'architecture religieuse, de l'art roman à la Renaissance en passant par le gothique. Au Moyen-Âge, le quartier est occupé par les drapiers en laine. On note la présence d'un moulin à foulon dès le milieu du XIIe siècle, à Châlons. Le foulonnage de la laine - battage du tissu avec de l'argile - permettait de dégraisser la laine et d'assouplir et feutrer le drap. Un règlement des drapiers de Châlons, datant de 1243 et ratifié par l'évêque en 1247, règlement conservé par "La Société allemande de Leipzig", contient des détails sur "les procédés de fabrication, de tissage, de teinture, de pliage, usités à Châlons, sur les espèces, les couleurs, la mesure des draps, sur le pesage des laines, sur les avances d'argent aux ouvriers, sur les conditions de la vente, sur le respect dû aux gardes, etc. Les peines fixées pour les contraventions sont l'amende, les dommages-intérêts, la saisie et la destruction des objets défectueux, et la perte de l'ostel un an et un jour par les fabricants. L'évêque déclare à la fin qu'il abandonne tous droits de poursuite, d'amende et toute juridiction : Et de toutes ces choses devant dites, nos n'i avons oquison, amende ne justice." La confrérie des drapiers fait un embellissement de l'église en 1356. A proximité, se trouvait l’abbaye de Saint-Pierre-aux-Monts, remplacée au XIXe siècle par la caserne de cavalerie Tirlet, devenue depuis la cité administrative. Nicolas Appert, né à Châlons (sa maison natale est face à l'église) et inventeur de la conservation des aliments dans des bouteilles en verre chauffées au bain-marie, a été baptisé dans cette église en 1749. Saint-Jean a été consacrée en 1165, la nef et une partie du transept central datent de cette époque, mais ont été remaniés. Le choeur est du XIIIe et a été restauré en 1603. Le portail, baie ogivale encadrée de quatre archivoltes avec, au-dessus, trois fenêtres ogivales, est également du XIIIe. Une inscription du portail porte la date de 1356 et semble indiquer que la compagnie des tisserands aurait participé à son achèvement. Vers 1500, les arbalétriers construisent une chapelle, sur la façade sud, dédiée à Saint-Sébastien. Le mur extérieur de cette chapelle porte un cadran solaire. Le clocher-tour, au dessus de la croisée de transept, date de 1603. Sa construction a entraîné le renforcement des piles. Les bas-côtés sont remaniés en 1671. Endommagée, l'église a été restaurée au XIXe siècle. La sacristie au nord-est a été supprimée à la même époque.
