Sutton Forest

Travel Guide

A forest with tall trees and sunlight filtering through the leaves.

This little village was one of New South Wales’ earliest settlements. It has stately manors, heritage churches and prizewinning wineries within its green meadows.

Set within rolling green hills between two rivers, Sutton Forest and its quaint historic manors evoke the English countryside in the Southern Highlands. Walk or drive through the small township’s streets and admire the grand architecture, some of it dating back to the 1830s. Sample the region’s fine cool-climate wines from the village’s surrounding vineyards and cellar doors.

Check out Sutton Forest’s magnificent manors on a drive along the country lanes. While many are not open to the public, you can see the stately architecture and beautiful gardens from the street. The grand Hillview is an elegant weatherboard manor used as the country residence of the New South Wales governors between 1882 and 1958.

See the Old Butcher Shop, with its traditional wide awnings, and the Old Post Office. The Everything Store is an antique and curio shop operating since the 1830s. Visit historic St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, which was established in 1880. See the headstones of troopers and bushrangers in the graveyard of the All Saints Anglican Church.

Visit the town’s Equestrian Centre and ride through the pretty countryside on horseback. Play golf at the stately country club resort. Pick your own berries or enjoy sumptuous sweet treats made from Sutton Forest’s delicious fresh produce at the local berry farm. Sutton Forest is a landmark on several wine trails through the Southern Highlands, so visit the township’s excellent wineries and cellar doors to experience some of the region’s fine cool-climate wines paired with a meal at a winery restaurant.

Arrive in December to see the Southern Highlands Christmas Fair, an extensive local market offering crafts, produce, specialty foods and regional wines.

Sutton Forest is located in a picturesque rural area of the Southern Highlands, 137 kilometres (85 miles) southwest of Sydney. Select from several self-contained cottages and private accommodation options. The historic township is a wonderful spot to stop by on your heritage, antiques or food and wine tour of the Southern Highlands.
