#### One of the most important Venetian monuments in Heraklion, this former cathedral now houses the city’s Municipal Art Gallery.

Make sure you visit St. Mark's Basilica during your trip to Heraklion to admire the fine Venetian architecture and browse the contemporary artwork on display. Admire architectural features which have lasted nearly eight centuries. Imagine the comfort that Venetians away from home would have derived from seeing a replica of the clock tower from St. Mark’s Square in Venice.

Look for St. Mark's Basilica directly opposite the Lions Fountain in Heraklion’s central square. The basilica was constructed in 1239 and for many years served as the city’s central cathedral. It was converted into a mosque for a brief period during the Turkish reign of Crete. Now it serves as the city’s Municipal Art Gallery and features a regularly changing program of exhibitions. Many of the original features have been restored as this is widely recognized as one of the most important Venetian monuments in Heraklion. The bell tower, however, does not remain.

As you make your way around Lions Square, one of the most distinctive structures you will see is St. Mark's Basilica. The high arches and thin columns are typical of Venetian architecture of the time. Step inside and look for the many original features that still remain. Frescoes and altar carvings on the walls and ornate windows set back into the stone recall the time when this was the most important place of worship in the city.

Spend some time browsing the artwork on display as well. Permanent exhibits include work by Greek artists, Maria Fiorakis, Lefteris Kanakakis and Thomas Fanorakis, as well as old photographs of Crete. The gallery also holds exhibits with popular themes including photography, painting and sculpture. Back outside, look up to the clock tower. This is an exact replica of the clock tower in St. Mark’s Square in Venice.

St. Mark's Basilica is open Monday through Friday and is free to enter.

The rooms and property exceeded my expectations. Well maintained and beautifully appointed. The staff couldn't have been more welcoming and friendly. The property is on the hillside giving gorgeous views. I was nervous about dragging my suitcase up the hill but I was met in the parking area and everything was taken care of for me proactively. They have a lovely bar/restaurant area with a good selection of food and wine. You can't go wrong booking this wonderful property.

Stayed as a family of 4 for 9 days in mid August 2025, 2 adults and 2 children. Positives: Remote hill top location in Old Town Malia (10/10). Villas with private 10m to 15m length pools (10/10). Overall the teams were very helpful and did their best to support. Amazing views of Malia from your balcony from the hill top location (10/10). Notable mentions; Alexia at the front desk, New lady in the restaurant from Romania, Male supervisor / manager who helped us after we got locked out of the villa with 2 keys at night. Private pool chemical level being checked. Met the new owner at dinner whilst the teams were stressfully trying to work out our bill for a new menu and he said he his aware of what they need to improve on and service is not were he wants it to be. Negatives: Attention to detail I.e. 1 bed was missing its top cover for the first 3 nights. Very easy to lock yourself out of the villa because of the safety feature on the doors. Service in the restaurant needs to be improved / missed opportunity from the hotel due to isolated location. Catering options are very limited / Menu cards are confusing / Not clear what you have ordered and what you are paying for. Nightly disturbances from staffing quarters into the early morning (stayed in villa 407). No locks on the bathroom or toilet doors. Hot water in the tap & shower is extremely boiling hot. Toilet / Shower room on the lower floor in the 2 bedroom villas should have a solid divider as water gets everywhere.
