We didnt stay long as we were just picking up ferry to Santorini. After a quick look around though, I would definately come back to explore longer.
You'll appreciate the restaurants during your time in Nea Alikarnassos and you might want to plan a stop by Heraklion Port and Heraklion Archaeological Museum while you're in the area.

Loved our visit!
At first sight a big city, but it has many interesting parts when you walk around, very lively in the evening, and Knossos and the archeological museum were a highlight of my trip.
Heraklion was beautiful, but unfortunately we only stayed one night on our way to Chania.
Rent cars direct from a known agency!
There's a restaurant called Plani that's maybe a 4-minute walk from the Megaron. It's amazing.
