Nice front porch to sit and look at the beach. The room was well equipped though a little heavier comforter (or blanket) would have been nice (the AC worked well!). The pool was clean and the whole place was relaxing. We rented a golf cart through the place the hotel had recommended and it was delivered and picked up at the hotel - very easy. Not in control of the hotel, but the sargassum was horrible. Nice quite area away from main city and traffic. Unfortunately no swimming access to the ocean but they do have a great clean pool. Unfortunately a lot of weeds were coming to the shore and the aroma was not interesting. But overall a nice, small resort with an attentive staff. They included transportation to and from the airport. We chose Cocotal because it was outside the busy, noisy city of San Pedro, but close enough to walk, golf cart or cycle into town. We also liked the fact that they offer free transfers to and from the airport. Ben met us when we checked in and went over everything in detail. We booked a beachfront casita, which was roomy and quiet. Cocotal offers free bicycles with a lock if you want to ride into town and kayaks if you want to cruise around offshore. Ben also helped us book a snorkeling trip to Hol Chan. The room was super clean and did not smell damp. With all the heat and humidity, this can be a problem. The pool was very nice (not too hot, so it felt refreshing to jump in). There are plenty of chairs and lounge chairs in the pool area, on our porch, and right next to the water with plenty of shade to hide from the hot sun. After we checked out and were heading for the airport, Ben called our driver to tell us we had left our binoculars in our casita. Our flight was due to leave in 30 minutes, but Ben said he could make it in time to bring the binoculars, and he did! Would highly recommend the B-2 cabana, it was the perfect size for two and right on the beach - paradise. Would recommend renting a golf cart, the resort has bikes but it was nice to have the cart and know we could go anywhere on the island if we wanted. All the staff at Cocotal were amazingly friendly and helpful answering our many questions, helping us book a snorkel tour and picking us up from the airport (even though our flight came in early)! Beach cabin was very nice. Clean, friendly staff, pool and great beach area. Only problem was the sand flies!! Unbelievable number of bites and they itch like crazy. I think if they would rake and spray were the beach chairs are there would not be such a problem. We are still scratching and have been home 3 days. The staff is great, always very helpful. I consider it an excellent value for the price and friends, who came to visit, who were staying at other properties, were really impressed with the whole set up. the only negative consideration is that the cabana that we stayed in was quite dark. I would recommend substituting the old fluorescent bulbs with new, brighter, LEDs. The grounds are beautifully landscaped with palms, hibiscus, ferns, and other tropical plants, creating a secluded feeling while on the property. The dock has a nice rest area with hammocks and benches. There are lounge chairs on the beach. Water is crystal clear. We stayed in the main building with a small porch with a partial sea view. The large living area consisted of a complete kitchen, dining area, and living area with cable TV. The bathroom had a nice large shower. The bedroom had ample storage for clothes and a safe. The staff are great. Laid back and very attentive. They made all the arrangements for our excursions while on the island. Ben & staff always available for advice & setting up golf cart rental & private tours for snorkeling, diving, fishing, or visiting nearby islands. Free bikes on site was the best & it was fun getting around. Location is just north of San Pedro. Close enough to bike ride to (I’m 61 yrs old) yet feels far enough away to be away from it all. Eating favorites - Aji’s (walking distance), Estelle’s (near water taxi), and Caliente (lagoon side in town). Visit Secret Beach, the iguana refuge & use the hammocks on Ben’s private dock. Kayaks also available for free! Get bug spray on your way from airport as your prearranged taxi driver will stop there for food, drinks & necessities but Ben has most things covered. Rooms were great, comfy beds, hot shower, kitchen supplies. We didn’t use the pool (not big on sunning) & if you’re basing any of your decision on a hot & bubbly jacuzzi, talk to Ben. While we were there it was barely warm & jets were weak but we still got in from time to time after a long day out exploring. They have board games to borrow for rainy days & a dog named Jeff! Although there is not a bar on property, there is one right next door & many in walking distance (bike better!!) Almost all have happy hours so ask! No sense in “every hour is Hapoy hour” which means you’re paying full price :) Local beer is good & can be bought on draft in San Pedro airport & as low as $1.50 US during happy hour (or $2.50 normally). Would stay here again!!
