Admire the architecture of this 17th-century fort, discover exhibits of armor, jewelry and vintage cars and watch stunning sunsets over the Ganges River.

Visit the waterfront Ramnagar Fort to walk amid a regal architectural masterpiece and marvel as beautiful sunsets cast a mystical light over Varanasi’s rooftops. Explore a museum of antiquities including classic cars, period furniture, portraits and weaponry. Built in Mughal style, Ramnagar Fort dates back to the 17th century. Today, it’s a residence of the maharaja of Varanasi.

Climb the staircase that leads through the fort’s grand entrance to a large courtyard, surrounded by the fading grandeur of a royal citadel. Take time to admire the arcades, balconies, pavilions and towers. Note the intricate artwork that adorns parts of the solid sandstone walls. Peek inside reception rooms and the Durbar Hall, where Indian kings once held meetings. Find interesting carved statues at the fort’s two temples, the Vishnu Temple and Vyasa Kasi Temple.

At the fort’s museum, view exhibits of historical artifacts. Spot displays of antique cars, including an American Cadillac, a silver coach and chariots. Check out the armory collection, which ranges from cannons to daggers, guns and swords. See portraits of maharajas, old musical instruments and an astrological clock. Don’t miss the jewel-encrusted chairs, noble costumes and religious manuscripts.

Time your visit to coincide with the sunset. Sit on the waterfront steps and watch as the sun bathes the river and city rooftops in a golden light. The boats lined up along the river provide a great foreground for picturesque photos.

The fort sits on the eastern bank of the Ganges River in the southeastern section of Varanasi. It’s about a 45-minute drive from Godowlia Chowk or a 1-hour boat ride from Dasaswamedh Ghat. Alternatively, get here by walking across the pontoon bridge, located close to the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) campus. Access to the bridge is limited during the monsoon season, when water levels are higher.

Ramnagar Fort and its museum are open daily, except during major festivals. Pay one admission to cover entrance to both the fort and museum. The fort is particularly busy during October’s Dussehra festival, a Hindu celebration of good over evil.
