Easy check in and shown to our beach view room. Room was very clean and spacious. Large shower room and deck area were great. Extensive food options avaialble and all that we had were very tasty. Other facilities like pool and gym appeared inviting, although we only had 2 nights and so were unable to make use, as we had trips planned. We loved our room, verandah and open air shower. The bar and buffet dining was excellent. Staff was extremely courteous and professional. During our stay there it rained and we had rooms furthest from the lobby area. Parts of the walk to our room were unprotected from the rain and the walkways were quite wet and slippery despite attempts by the staff to mop. Further protection from adverse weather conditions would be appreciated. Ants. Beautiful nature and safari in Yala was amazing. When walking into the hotel reception you get the impression of the hotel being luxurious as advertised. However, when dining, getting to the pool area and into the accommodation everything is outdated and in poor/tires condition. Quite disappointed, as the hotel was quite expensive, the food was bad to mediocre, and they charge a ridiculous service charge/tax on over 30(!!)%. Was looking forward to enjoy a “luxury” hotel as advertised, and the pictures looked amazing. In reality, the place needs a major renovation and update to justify the claim as being a luxury hotel. The food quality needs to be improved to justify these prices. The staff were friendly, but had extreme poor English skills, which made them misunderstand orders and inquiries all the time. Oh by the way, a lot of ants everywhere to be found in the accommodation. The location and views are a dream and the buffet breakfast was one of the best meals I had in Sri Lanka. I spent the day at the pool, in the spa, drinking a mojito on the beach front, and enjoying the views. They helped me arrange a safari to Yala which was wonderful. A must stay on any trip to Sri Lanka! The only downside was the dirt road leading to the hotel is in really banged up condition so was a bit hard on the car that dropped me off, but I was told the hotel is on a national park land so it can't be paved. For the second evening we had to drive out for 30 minutes to the nearby town Tissa to eat out. The service is lacking and it's not 5-star hotel standard. The staff were more friendly to the locals than foreigners. We felt slight judgement from them too. They weren't keen to offer help or service. We had to ask and keep asking. Although for what we asked we got the service needed. My initial impression was positive as the property is large, (seemed) peaceful and has lovely views. While being checked into my room I was a bit surprised about being asked if I needed to know how to use the facilities in the room. Of course I would! The air con had no remote control and was hidden in the corner and I wouldn’t have found the controller had I not asked. The woman showing me in seemed sullen and miserable. Again, initial impressions of the room were quite good - very large and spacious with a ginormous bathroom. After that I noticed a few minor inconveniences - hardly any plug sockets, room safe didn’t work and the bedding was really uncomfortable. The sheet was too small for the bed and was fitted over a slippery mattress protector. Later that night I found myself slipping and sliding around a lot, which contributed in part to two very bad nights’ sleep. First morning I woke early to go on safari and the packed breakfast was adequate although the bread was stale and I couldn’t eat most of what was in the box as it had cakes/croissants etc. and I can’t eat anything containing dairy. After the safari I went to the pool. Very quiet and peaceful but hard to relax as there are little shaded areas and the loungers don’t have cushions and so are really uncomfortable.
