Our overall experience was disappointing, particularly when it came to service and attention to detail. The hotel did not seem to be on top of basic room maintenance. For example, the closet door in our room would not open properly—something that should have been noticed and corrected before a guest checked in. We also found the front desk staff to be unnecessarily rigid and felt that the hotel nickel-and-dimed its guests. Our room was already cleaned and available when we arrived around noon, yet we were told we would have to pay an additional $50 if we wanted to check in before 2:00 PM. I can understand an early check-in fee when special arrangements are required, but charging $50 when the room was already sitting ready seemed excessive. On the way to our room, we noticed another room in the same price category that appealed to us a little more. We politely asked if we could switch to that room and were given a flat “No,” without any explanation or attempt to accommodate us. Finally, a large yellow “Wet Floor” sign was left directly in front of our room for our entire two-night stay. When we asked if it could be moved, we were simply told that it could not. It may seem like a small issue, but it was another example of the lack of attention and flexibility we experienced throughout our stay. Our impression of the hotel is that could benefit greatly from better attention to its rooms and a more accommodating, guest-friendly approach to service.

Quite a notable stay! I originally booked a corner room at The Sofia as a “just in case” option, but did not see that the stay was nonrefundable. I tried all kinds of ways to appeal and get out of it, but they wouldn’t even let me sell the stay to someone else. This really isn’t the reason for my rating, but it did set the tone. The hotel staff were not very friendly in general, and sort of just did the minimum. I get the strong impression that someone bought an aging hotel and was struggling to get it up to speed. Most of the hotel is decorated in a dark gothic style, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that the entire 7th floor was remodeled in modern light colors, and our room was mostly shades of white (which did not match its pictures on the website, which still displayed the old dark style). The outer walls still have the old windows, but the room had nice quartz countertops and modern bathroom hardware. Annoyingly, the shower head did not swivel much, and not enough to get into a convenient position - it shot too high, mostly at our heads. The room was otherwise nice and quiet and pretty comfortable. There was a hydration station on our floor, which was nice. On the afternoon of the second day of our stay we ran out of hot water. I didn’t think to contact the front desk until later in the evening, and they said they were having problems all over the hotel, but would be fixed in “a few hours”. I was expecting a bit more of a wow factor with this property. There really wasn't a luxury element. Felt as though they are relying on the ocean view, which is spectacular, and the proximity to the beach, also spectacular. Still things felt a bit run down. Overall, quite clean and well organized. Beach access and view can not be surpassed.

Nice property and friendly staff. Only issue was aggressive maid service banging on my door at 8am - at the Margaritaville in the Gaslamp District. Always wonder if they are just trying to wake everyone up.
