Spot dolphins in the Caribbean Sea and discover native wildlife in the wetlands at this charming beach town.

Omoa is a small beach town in Honduras known for its gleaming beaches that stretch along the Caribbean Sea. Lie on the white sand and enjoy the sight of blue water stretching out for miles before you. Keep watch for schools of dolphins that frequent the harbour.

Explore the imposing stone ruins of Castillo de San Fernando (San Fernando Fortress). Built by the Spanish in the late 18th century, the fortress was designed to protect the city from pirate attacks and foreign invasion. The fortress was later used as a prison. Today, you can explore the site and learn more about it at the museum next door.

Get in touch with nature at the Jaloa Wetlands. You can see anything from alligators to manatees and monkeys. Follow the Mogotillo Trail along the Mogote River and into the jungle. Huge natural pools make for a welcome place to cool off.

Although Omoa is small, it has plenty of amenities. There are a handful of accommodation options or you can head to several of the nearby towns for more choices. The bustling town centre offers charming shops and restaurants serving traditional Honduran cuisine. Try the local meal of beans, rice and tortillas for an authentic dining experience. Buy a souvenir such as a mahogany necklace, a Mayan-themed figure or a bottle of coffee liqueur.

Omoa is located 43.5 miles (70 kilometres) north of San Pedro Sula, which is the second-largest city in Honduras and has a large airport that offers flights to many international destinations.

From Omoa you can easily boat or drive to Puerto Cortés, which sits just 11 miles (18 kilometres) to the east. Puerto Cortés is the main port of Honduras and one of the most active in Central America, because of its export of bananas. While it is less picturesque than Omoa, Puerto Cortés is worth visiting to see a working Honduran town.
