Marina di Massa

Travel Guide

Revel in seaside fun, visit an animal park and explore buildings that are hundreds of years old when you visit this popular resort in central Italy.

Marina di Massa is a seaside playground on the Tuscan coast. Flanked by mountains that are draped in snow in the winter, the area is one of great natural beauty. Have fun on the long sandy beach, enjoy coastal walks and travel a short distance inland to explore historical palaces.

During the long hot summer, the beach is the undoubted star of the show, with its fine sand, public and private bathing areas and calm water.  One of the other highlights is the long pier that extends for 213 feet (700 meters) into the sea. Stroll along the boardwalk and take in the wonderful views of the sea and the mountains. At the end of the pier, you will most likely see a clutch of fisherman.

On leaving the pier, stop by one of the restaurants along the shore where fresh seafood are often the dishes of the day.

If the children are itching for something else to do, take them to Rabbit Park, where they can feed goats, ducks and rabbits. Other attractions here include the bird exhibit and children’s rides.

Head approximately 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) inland to Massa and its historical buildings. Visit the 16th-century cathedral, admire the renaissance Ducal Palace and tour the Diocesan Museum, housed in a 16th-century palace. Inside is a rich collection of religious art. Go to the Piazza degli Aranci, at the center of which is a large obelisk surrounded by statues of lions.

Sitting atop a rocky hill, a short walk from the town center is Malaspina Castle, which dates back to the 12th century. Take a guided tour of the ancient structure and study the works of art in its cultural center.

Marina di Massa is in southwest Massa, between the Marina di Carrara and Forte di Marmi. Fly to Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport and rent a car for the 75-mile (125-kilometer) drive east along the coast. Be captivated by the area’s beautiful coastal scenery and history.
