#### Choose from various restaurants, admire the colourful cliffs and bring your board to this sheltered surfing hotspot in the town.

Mareta Beach is one of the main stretches of sand in the charming coastal town of Sagres. Backed by colorful rocky cliffs, the bay is sheltered from the region’s westerly winds, making it popular with sunbathers. Enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants and watch the locals and vacationers go by. 

Arrive at the rocky cliffs above the beach and admire the excellent view of the sand and ocean. Descend the makeshift steps down to the beach. Lay down a blanket on the soft sand for sunbathing and picnicking. Read a book and relax in this tranquil haven, before cooling down with a swim in the Atlantic Ocean. You can rent a sun lounger and a thatched umbrella to shelter you from the scorching afternoon sun.

Bring your kids to beachcomb for aquatic treasures along the 2,300-foot (700-meter) stretch of sand and splash around with them in the waves. Note that the beach is supervised by lifeguards in summer and the water is generally fairly calm, with a gentle slope. Due to its large area, the strand is rarely crowded.

Surfers take advantage of the beach break here by taking their boards out on the water, particularly in winter. Rent a paddleboat or consider a banana boat ride or canoe trip.

Snap photos of the jagged cliffs that surround the beach. Notice the range of colors in the vegetation on these rock formations. Clamber over the rocks southwest of the beach.

Mareta Beach is on the southern flank of the town of Sagres in southwestern Portugal. It occupies a long stretch of the Atlantic coastline on the way south to Sagres Fort. Leave your car in the parking lot near the entrance to the beach or in one of the spaces reserved for restaurant customers. Visit nearby attractions, such as Tonel Beach, Baleeira Beach and the Sagres Garden.
