The best area to stay in Mahama is generally within the Mahama Refugee Camp itself, as accommodation options outside the camp are extremely limited. For visitors, especially those working with NGOs or on humanitarian projects, staying within the camp offers unparalleled convenience. The guest houses here are typically basic but clean, providing essential amenities. They are often located near the main administrative offices and community centres within the camp, making logistics and access straightforward.Solo travellers and those on business will find these guest houses practical. They offer a direct connection to the community and the work being done, saving significant travel time to and from larger towns like Kirehe, which are some distance away.

The best times to go to Mahama are during the dry seasons, which run from June to September and from December to February. These months offer consistently pleasant weather, with less rainfall and plenty of sunshine, making it ideal for outdoor activities and exploring the local area. The roads are generally in better condition during these periods, which is a significant advantage given the rural setting. For those interested in wildlife viewing, particularly birdwatching, the dry seasons are excellent. The reduced vegetation makes it easier to spot animals, and many species congregate around the remaining water sources. This makes it a great time for nature enthusiasts and those seeking a peaceful retreat.Conversely, the rainy seasons, from March to May and October to November, can bring heavy downpours and make travel more challenging due to muddy roads.
