Lanzarote Travel Guide Video

This Spanish island offers sophisticated seaside resorts, stunning volcanic caves and César Manrique’s intriguing architecture.

Enter the exciting world of Lanzarote, a Spanish island that has as much natural beauty as it has historic presence. Offering luxurious village life, windsurfing schools, party resorts and sweeping plains of volcanic rock, this slice of the Canary Islands is sure to please.

Below Mount Guanapay lies Teguise, Lanzarote's historic former capital. Admire its traditional architecture, dating back as early as the 16th century. Climb to Santa Barbara Castle for incredible views and a museum exhibiting relics of Lanzarote's pirate history.

Many of Lanzarote's tourist landmarks were promoted and developed by César Manrique, a renowned architect. As you explore the island, note his style of integrating buildings with nature. Learn more about his life at the César Manrique Foundation, established within his former home.

See Manrique's work at Jameos del Agua, a series of caves characterized by black volcanic rock. Delve into the lava tubes at Cuevea de Los Verdes and enjoy sweeping coastal views from the Mirador del Rio lookout. Manrique's Cactus Garden also enchants with its architectural beauty.

Witness striking results of volcanic activity at Timanfaya National Park. These jagged plains, the Malpais (“Badlands”), were created by oozing lava flows. While here, eat at El Diablo restaurant, where meals are grilled using steam from geysers. Nearby, watch frothing waves crashing against serrated cliffs at Los Hervideros Caves.

Near the townships of Yaiza and Tias, find Lanzarote's primary beach resorts. Shop for high-end goods at sophisticated Playa Blanca or join a disco-driven nightlife at the more popular Puerto del Carmen. Windsurfing schools line the beachfronts of both locales.

Fly into Lanzarote's international airport near Arrecife, Lanzarote's cultured capital. This port is a hub for shopping, with artisanal stores, fresh fish markets and duty-free wholesalers. Enjoy its bustling beach and spend evenings trying tapas around Charco de San Gines, the city lagoon.

Lanzarote is best navigated by car so reserve a rental to pick up at the airport. Visit in February to experience the raucous fun of Carnival, the global festival of parades.
