The staff are all extremely kind and accommodating (they do not speak English, so google translator is a must if you’re foreign and they are quick to use it) The traditional breakfast was great, with many small dishes that leave you satisfied but not full to start your day. Their gardens are magical and their rooms are super modern, clean and authentic to traditional ryokans. Loved our stay and loved the proximity to Shuzenji’s main village. A hidden gem in the Izu prefecture. There is private onsen in room and restaurant just at the corner. In room drinks for free and spacious, perfect location for recharge and away from city. The property itself is gorgeous, and the staff was kind and attentive, but the place definitely had a noticeable mildew smell, which took away from the experience a bit. Unfortunately, we missed out on both breakfast and dinner because we didn’t book those in advance (lesson learned). I tried reaching out 24 hours before check-in but never got a response, so just a heads-up to plan meals ahead of time. There’s also not much nearby that’s open for breakfast or dinner, which left us scrambling a bit. The staff was incredibly nice and helpful. The breakfast was very nice and traditional. They also provided traditional robes, socks, and sandals to wear to breakfast. There is not a lot of dining options around or much to do. If you have time, take a taxi to the bel-air park.
