Enjoy the buzz of its seaside square, soak up the views from its jetty or just relax on the warm sands of this beautiful stretch of coastline near Adelaide.

Henley Beach, just to the southwest of the Adelaide city centre, is both a beach and a suburb. As one of the closest beaches to Perth’s central business district, it has always been popular. Recent redevelopments of the seaside have further boosted its appeal.

When you first arrive at Henley Beach, you can be forgiven for wanting to hang out at newly developed Henley Square for a while first. It’s a cool and relaxing place to mingle with the locals.

The sea beckons though, so first head to the beach, throw down your towel and sunglasses on the sand and jump in the calm, cool and clear waters for a refreshing swim. The Henley Surf Life Saving Club is stationed right on the beach, with volunteers keeping watch during the busier times.

To dry off, take a walk out along the 220-metre (722-feet) Henley Jetty. Although built in the 1880s and made of wood, the jetty was extensively renovated in 2018 and is as strong as ever. Admire the sweeping views as you stroll out to sea and sit on a bench and breathe in the salty sea air.

Back in Henley Square, use the fun shower effect of the water sculpture to wash the sand off your legs and feet. Kids will love playing in the water feature for a bit longer. The square’s wave-shaped benches with bay views have got to be the best spot to enjoy an ice cream or sip on a coffee. Or, if you need a little more than that, grab a takeaway meal from one of the many cafés and have a picnic on the lawn.

Make a daytrip out of your visit to Henley Beach by using the River Torrens Linear Park Trail to get there on foot or by bike. This scenic trail runs from the city centre along the River Torrens to where it flows into the bay at the southern end of Henley Beach.

Henley Beach has public toilet facilities. It’s easily reached by public transport and free parking is available near the square and along the Esplanade.
