Built by the “Mozart of Painting,” this bronze signifier of peace is one of the main works of art lining the busy Malecón walkway.
With its chest proudly puffed out, the Dove of Peace Monument is one of the most iconic emblems of La Paz. The bronze sculpture stands on the coastal promenade of the Malecón, overlooking the Gulf of California. Get a photo standing beside the large work of art, with scenic water making up the background.
The structure was created by sculptor Juan Soriano, who is one of the most acclaimed Mexican artists of the 20th century. Hear how people called him the Mozart of Painting, a reference to his initial rise to prominence as a child prodigy. He completed this sculpture in 2003 and died just 3 years later.
Notice how the dove is perched on a range of pointed shapes that are hoisted by a circular platform. The artwork is one of 16 sculptures dotted across the Malecón esplanade.
Stay in the shade of the tall, bending palm trees, as you stroll along the promenade and study other statues near the water. These include such works as The Old Man and the Sea, the Paradise of the Sea and the Mantarraya.
While walking along the boulevard, stop at some of the cafés and restaurants for a meal and drinks by the sea. Consider joining some of the joggers and cyclists on this wide avenue. Elegant benches line the rear of the white-sand beaches here. Spot the colorful beachside sign spelling out the name of the city.
