Despite dating back to the 18th century, Dresden’s iconic church remained a pile of rubble for half a century following the 1945 bombing of Dresden. Today, following a long reconstructive period, the Church of Our Lady has been returned to its original state, and is considered one of the most important examples of Protestant sacred architecture in the region. Climb its arched dome or take in a concert within its cavernous nave. Located on Neumarkt Square, the Church of Our Lady is located right in the heart of Dresden. Approach on foot to see it looming above the surrounding buildings. Capture photographs of its Baroque-style architecture before moving inside to discover its beautiful interior. Sign up for a guided tour to learn about the history of the church, including its 18th-century origins and its complete destruction during World War II. Venture to the basement to learn about the reconstruction of the church that took place at the end of the 20th century. See photographs, plans and archaeological finds from the site as you make your way through the exhibition. Climb the steep staircase to reach the church’s dome. At 220 feet (67 meters) high, the viewing platform offers panoramic views of central Dresden. Be aware that the climb is strenuous and should only be attempted by those confident in their physical ability. Listen to music at one of the church’s regular concert events. The Church of our Lady is home to two vocal ensembles and also hosts the weekly Spiritual Sunday sessions. A calendar of concert events, including those which include the church’s enormous organ, can be found on the official website. The Church of our Lady is open daily and a fee applies to make the ascent to the dome.
