Enjoy scenic views of the Choptank River from the beautiful replica of a historic lighthouse and learn about Cambridge’s rich maritime heritage.

Find the Choptank River Lighthouse in Long Wharf Park, on the waterfront of Cambridge, Maryland. It’s a famous spot in the city, near the historic district. Visit a lovely and well-maintained lighthouse to take panoramic photos of the river and discover its interesting history.

In the late 1880s and early 1900s the Choptank River was filled with steamboats that sailed from Baltimore and stopped at Long Wharf to deliver passengers, seafood and produce. The Cherrystone lighthouse was one of the original lights guiding ships and boats of all sizes in the area. It was put in place in 1921 and remained at the Choptank River site until 1964, when it was removed under the Coast Guard's modernization program. Visit the newer Choptank River Lighthouse and explore a fantastic replica of the historic Cherrystone lighthouse that was built using original plans made available by the National Archives.

The picturesque lighthouse is a lovely hexagonal cottage-style construction that stands on a platform at the end of one of the piers of the Cambridge City Marina. Inside find the City of Cambridge dockmaster’s office and a small museum where you can learn about the original lighthouse's history and the area's maritime heritage.

Enjoy exhibits with descriptive photos and interesting maritime artifacts, such as the prisms used to make a small light viewable for miles and the fog bell striker displayed on the second floor. During some weekends, volunteer lighthouse keepers work in the lighthouse to welcome visitors and answer questions.

While you are visiting the lighthouse, walk up the winding staircase to get to the upper deck. From this elevated perspective, take fantastic photos of the many lovely boats sailing in the river.

The famous Choptank River Lighthouse is normally open to the public for free. After enjoying this beautiful site, walk to historic downtown Cambridge, just a few blocks away. Find restaurants, shops, galleries and museums in this popular area.
