Those with a taste for adventure will adore this secluded beach on the eastern end of Formentera, accessible only by rock staircase.
The Balearic beaches tend not to be the best destination for people looking for solitude, but Cala Codolar, on the small island of Formentera, is the exception. Hidden beneath a mid-1800s lighthouse at the base of the Pilar de la Mola, this beach is a place you might just have to yourself. Tackle the walk down the steep rocky cliff to be rewarded with a personal beach on the Mediterranean, completely unbothered by other people.
Leave the car at the Faro de la Mola, pausing to find the tribute to Jules Verne, whose novel Hector Servadac was inspired by the view of the white lighthouse over the gray cliffs. Set out carefully down the cliff, pausing occasionally to appreciate the views of the sea as it crashes into the rocks below.
Pass the perfectly picturesque shed that protects a few dinghies. Practice climbing up the sheer rock face that leads back up to the lighthouse, or head into the water with a snorkel to see the many fish species that call the area home.
Bring a picnic of bread and cheese (and perhaps a few bottles of beer) to enjoy while sunning on the broad flat rocks. Only 82 feet (25 meters) long and 16 feet (5 meters) wide, the nook feels almost like a private island.
Drive to Faro de la Mola in 20 minutes from the center of Formentera or catch a 30-minute ferry to Formentera from Ibiza which run every few minutes from the main Port of Ibiza. Limited parking is available near the lighthouse. The descent to the beach is approximately 160 meters, and is not handicap accessible. Hiking shoes are required. There are no restaurants nearby, and there are no lifeguards on duty.
