Snap photos of the natural gorge and waterfall and marvel at the colorful creatures in the world’s largest free-flight aviary and bird sanctuary.

Birds of Eden comprises a vast forest under a mesh dome that enables visitors to get a good view of nature’s flying gems. The award-winning sanctuary has a labyrinth of elevated walkways with views of the birds in their scenic environment. Learn about the many species of colorful winged creatures from plaques and helpful docents in this natural haven, which covers 5.7 acres (2 hectares).

Stroll along 1.2 miles (2 kilometers) of boardwalk paths to encounter the range of bird species. Take a guided tour of the sanctuary for a greater understanding of these fascinating animals and the aims and projects of the site. It rehabilitates former caged pets and birds seized from zoos and dubious breeders and lets them loose here.

Admire the picturesque surroundings of the sanctuary, which contains a natural gorge and a waterfall. It stands within an Afromontane forest with trees that grow to almost 200 feet (60 meters) tall. The enclosure is bordered by discreet wire mesh and cables that give an illusion of the outdoors.

Pick your favorite from the sanctuary’s collection of around 3,000 birds from 280 species. These include macaws, pink flamingos and toucans. Inspect creatures, such as Patagonian conures, which are frequently captured to be sold as pets. Take your kids on a scavenger hunt with photos of birds to check off the list.

Dine at the Jandaya Café, which serves breakfast, panini, burgers and hot dogs, among other treats. The complex has a gift shop with souvenirs relating to the birds.

Pay a fee for entrance and get discounts for kids. Consider a combo ticket to include the Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary and Monkeyland. The site opens daily from morning until late afternoon.

Birds of Eden is 9 miles (15 kilometers) northeast of Keurboomstrand in the Plettenberg Bay region. While in the area, visit other intriguing sites, such as the Elephant Sanctuary and the Tenikwa Wildlife Awareness Centre.
