Staff were very friendly and helpful. Food was great (a lot of locals seemed to be eating here too). Room was simple but comfortable and very clean. There are a few areas that are a little tired and worn, but not to the level of impacting guests. Spacious and comfortable room, with en-suite. Very clean, though not the most modern furnishings. Could have done with a shaving mirror above the bathroom basin. Evening meal was Ok - typical pub grub with large portions. Service was very friendly and helpful, and the beer was good. Had to park 10mm away in public car park. Both rooms were clean, but were showing damp & water damage in the bedrooms & bathrooms and so could do with some TLC. Toiletries were provided which is always handy on a trip like this when you need to keep weight down. I didnt have any of the beer, but it was a popular choice with the other guests with lots of local options. There is a nice terrace to sit out on with views across the fields. The Cumberland was very friendly and the off road parking very useful in Alston - it is quite a small town and other accommodation in the town lack the option of parking.
