Plus points: Excellent location. Quirkiness. Excellent cooked breakfast.
In the process of being refurbished - comfortable at the moment, but needs redecorating.
The hotel was being renovated. Our room was in the process of updating and was not ready to be let out. It had clean bed linen, but needed a thorough clean not just top dusting. It was understaffed with the few staff trying to do everything and failing.
I could list all the faults which are the same as previous reviews. The main problem was that all the electric appliances were run from a multiplug, including the kettle, the TV and an old convector heater brought into the room as the radiators didn't work.
Unfortunately this was a last minute booking and we were unable to go elsewhere, so had to stay. To be fair the staff were pleasant and helpful when we asked for anything and did sort out an overcharging issue discovered when we arrived home but they were totally overwhelmed with trying to renovate and run a hotel at the same time.

Nice room, stairs could do with a bit of a hoovering, seen literally no one in the day we were there, very quiet
Quaint hotel with friendly staff who went out of their way to make you welcome. Food reasonably priced and good value.

The stay was just for overnight on way to Edinburgh. The hotel itself ok but the town was cute walkable and right on the North Sea. Found a great pub and then a restaurant for an amazing dinner. The hotel did live up to the haunted tales as we did experience something paranormal but not scary.
Great hotel restaurant was Indian plus some local food.
Was amazing meal highly recommend hotel but especially Indian food fantastic.

Friendly staff. Good food. Clearly there are some issues regarding the management if the hotel as the decor was tired, some things like the bathroom extraction did not work and it was evident that underneath the beds had not been cleaned in a long time. But overall the stay was pleasant. Overpriced for what you get.
Plain but comfortable room. Bar and restaurant areas exceptoinally and clean and well organised and a credit to the staff; who were welcoming, friendly and always willing to go the extra mile. Food was beyond expectation; this is great place to eat; and takeaways seem to be very popular.

Breakfast was not available.
Room & bathroom was clean, bed comfortable.
Very few other guests.
Had a great stay here . All my needs were catered for . Room was clean and well laid out . Dinner was tasty. The room was quiet at night and I slept very well. All topped up with a full English breakfast before heading on my way
Hotel is in need of repair, room so ok beds were comfy our biggest issue was no hot water to have a shower in the morning looking at previous reviews this has been an issue for a while.

Schooner Hotel
It was extremely clean ,room well equipped, but avoid dining there. The meal was inedible and overpriced. It felt like Fawlty Towers!
Please do not stay here
Pros: central location in Alnmouth, with good pubs nearby. Staff were friendly (albeit not helpful)
Cons: The pictures on the listing are not what the hotel currently looks like, it has been (badly) refurbished. The hotel does not have the free parking as advertised, the parking is on a busy street and is only valid for 2 hours at a time. Staff are impossible to find, it seems a one-man band in the kitchen, bar and front of house. We were shown 3 separate rooms, all of which were unclean; with black hair on the surfaces and carpets hair, paint stains on carpets, dust, blood in the sink, dirty cups, water damage from the ceiling, spider webs, and general damage to fixtures. The electrics around the hotel are generally unsafe, with flickering lights, corroded sockets, fire break glass points hanging from wires from the ceiling, and cables badly repaired with electrical tape. There was initially no toilet paper in the room, and we were then delivered 2 half-used rolls. There was no hot water in one room, and the other having hot water coming out in explosive bursts from the sink. The bed was hard, lumpy, and covered in black hair (but did not have bed bugs, I checked). The heating in the hotel is not adequate; you cannot control the radiators and there is no heating in the hallways or bar area.
Value for money !
Ok the hotel shows its age in places, but our room was very clean, the bathroom had recently been refitted and was excellent
The manager "Sam" could not of been more helpful and friendly
Highly recommend the Indian restaurant, which is partnof the hotel, probably the best curry I've every had !
I don't understand why the previous reviews were so negative. I've stayed in various hotels all over the world and this one was perfectly fine. Room was clean, bed comfy, bathroom clean and power shower worked great. Manager didn't speak great English, but once we got chatting, he turned out to be a really nice guy.

Not good
Understanding the hotel is in a 400 year old building and not wanting to sound like an entitled American. The hot water didn’t work none not a drop, that being said the beds sucked felt like I was on a box spring. Now that said the staff was grate and the food was good the location is amazing. We did however have a grate view of the roof top with old broken ironing boards and an old painting that was crumbling in the rain. The place has issues and not at all worth the price we paid
Both hotel and room was not as advertised on website except for beer garden. Staff not friendly. Room was down a number of corridors and doors all of which were in poor repair. Room was not of a good standard and felt more like a hostel. I did not stay and booked alternative accommodation in the village as apart from the standard of whole hotel being poor, i did not feel safe as a female on my own
