Enjoy Utah’s stunning scenery and beautiful views of Salt Lake City from this manicured park. Bring a picnic lunch or snacks to eat while watching the sunset.

Escape the bustle of Salt Lake City and explore the great outdoors at Ensign Peak Nature Park. With close proximity to downtown, easy accessibility, beautiful vistas and even a fascinating historic connection to the Mormon Church, this little park provides a pleasant getaway during your visit to the city.

Hike along the park’s short, but fairly steep trail. Find the trailhead above the Utah State Capitol building. Follow the well-maintained path to the top of the peak. To return, simply backtrack along the trail. At just 1 mile (1.6 kilometers) round-trip, the trail is considered appropriate for most fitness levels.

From Ensign Peak, enjoy panoramic views of Salt Lake City and the wilderness beyond. Pack a picnic lunch or time your visit to watch the sunset. Stop and read the informational plaques along the trail, which share important facts and historical anecdotes.

Ensign Peak played a pivotal role in Salt Lake City’s formation. When Brigham Young and his fellow Mormons arrived in the Salt Lake Valley, they climbed to the top of the mountain to survey the land. From the peak, they envisioned the city they would build, free from religious persecution. Note the small monument at the summit that commemorates this moment.

Utah can get very hot. Bring lots of water and light clothing if you take the trek up the mountain during summer months. While hot, this is the most historically accurate time to visit Young first hiked into the valley in the summer of 1847. Try to plan your summer visit either early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the highest temperatures.

Because of the trail’s short distance, you can experience all that Ensign Peak Nature Park has to offer in an hour or two. Visit the park during daylight throughout the year. Find limited parking along the street, with more options near the church below.
