The National Library of Australia is the most comprehensive reference library in the country. It was formed as the National Parliamentary Library in 1901 and became the National Library in 1960\. Its collection includes Asian literary works and documents, rare books and manuscripts, photographs, maps, paintings, music and video. Browse the archives, choose something interesting and settle down in a reading room. There are over 10 million items in the library catalogue, so you’re sure to find something to your taste. The periodicals section has copies of the first newspaper printed in Australia as well as an enormous range of overseas publications. Explore the manuscripts archive to see gems like Captain Cook’s journal and original documents written by the country’s first prime minister. Brush up on your Aboriginal history in the Indigenous section or dig up old folk tales in the Oral History and Folk Law collections. The Asian history and culture section has a huge range of material from Japan, China and other countries in the region. You’ll find Buddhist scriptures from the 12th century as well as artworks and accounts from missionaries. Move on to the maps rooms to see the first Dutch charts of the Australian coast, military plans, old atlases, and street directories. Pore over the image archives to see historical photographs and paintings. Dancers and lovers of the performing arts should look over the selection of materials from touring Australian dance and theatre companies. The National Library of Australia also runs guided tours and holds special exhibitions throughout the year. The library is about one mile (1.6 kilometers) from Parliament House and there are several pay parking lots. ACTION buses from Canberra’s central business district stop here as well as other major attractions. The library is open every day except Good Friday and Christmas Day. (1,001 reviews) QT is a revamped Rydges Eaglehawk. The rooms and modernised and comfortable although our bathroom was showing signs of mould in the shower (that really just needed to be cleaned properly), Dyson hairdryers in-room was a nice touch as hotel hair dryers are usually rubbish. We had a room right right next to the lifts which was VERY noisy - it sounded like the light rail was right outside the door. The underground carpark is super low (1.9\~ metres absolutely maximum) and they don’t give you any notice of this upon check-in (nor is it well sign posted as you enter). The $35 per night charge is a bit rich for Canberra (Sydney pricing) but with the roadworks around the on street options were a bit limited close by. London Cct is chaos with all the infrastructure works to put in the light rail extension & this also affects pedestrian access. We were in town to go to the theatre and what should’ve taken 15min to walk was more like 25min. (1,000 reviews) Our stay at East Hotel was excellent as always. The room was clean, spacious, and comfortable, and check-in was smooth from start to finish. Parking was very convenient, especially with the on-site EV chargers. A special mention to Todd, who went above and beyond to accommodate our request even though I had mistakenly booked a different room type. Room service from Agostino’s was impressively fast, and every reception staff member we interacted with was respectful, friendly, and genuinely helpful. Check-out was also a breeze—it literally took under three minutes. I’ve stayed here multiple times and have never had a bad experience. East Hotel is definitely my go-to whenever I’m in Canberra. Highly recommended. (1,001 reviews) Pretty good hotel. Though more of a car park above hotel. Like everyone else in Canberra they seem to be obsessed with driving. I know it’s not a very walkable city but I have managed just fine getting around on foot with a little effort. The hotel has super wide hallways, but the rooms are a little narrow. Very trusting hotel so it was nice to be treated like a grown for a change. Great A/C also and the movie selection was a treat. No need to go out in Canberra a night (there’s nothing to do anyway, everyone is too boring). I would recommend it and stay there again.
