The National Archives of Australia was officially formed in 1961 to preserve and promote access to important documents from the country’s history. It holds everything from government legislation to blueprints and patent applications. There’s a series of permanent exhibits as well as frequent special exhibitions, lecture series and workshops. Set your mind on a topic and make your way over to a reading room. Search the archives online before you visit and order documents ahead of your arrival. You’ll have access to military records, declassified intelligence, immigration and departure forms, among other documents. Be sure to take a look at the permanent exhibits to see some of the archives’ most important and interesting material. Visit the Federation Gallery to learn about the founding of Australia. You’ll see the original Australian Constitution, the Royal Commission of Assent and other documents related to the federation of the six colonies in 1901\. Memory of a Nation displays an extensive collection of migration selection documents, photographs and information about influential people, inventions and events. Move on to Discovering Mildenhall’s Canberra to admire the photographs taken by W.J. Mildenhall, the photographer commissioned to document the capital’s construction. The Faces of Australia wall features a selection of photographs of people from around the country during the booming post-World War II years. Settle down for a coffee in the café, which contains an exhibition about books once banned in Australia. The archives also has a constantly changing range of exhibitions on topics as diverse as fashion, anthropology and politics. Check the website for details. The National Archives is located on Queen Victoria Terrace, not far from Old Parliament House. There is free two-hour parking in front of the building. For longer visits, pay to park in Federation Mall, a street not far from the archives. ACTION buses from Canberra’s central business district also stop nearby. (1,001 reviews) QT is a revamped Rydges Eaglehawk. The rooms and modernised and comfortable although our bathroom was showing signs of mould in the shower (that really just needed to be cleaned properly), Dyson hairdryers in-room was a nice touch as hotel hair dryers are usually rubbish. We had a room right right next to the lifts which was VERY noisy - it sounded like the light rail was right outside the door. The underground carpark is super low (1.9\~ metres absolutely maximum) and they don’t give you any notice of this upon check-in (nor is it well sign posted as you enter). The $35 per night charge is a bit rich for Canberra (Sydney pricing) but with the roadworks around the on street options were a bit limited close by. London Cct is chaos with all the infrastructure works to put in the light rail extension & this also affects pedestrian access. We were in town to go to the theatre and what should’ve taken 15min to walk was more like 25min. (1,000 reviews) Our stay at East Hotel was excellent as always. The room was clean, spacious, and comfortable, and check-in was smooth from start to finish. Parking was very convenient, especially with the on-site EV chargers. A special mention to Todd, who went above and beyond to accommodate our request even though I had mistakenly booked a different room type. Room service from Agostino’s was impressively fast, and every reception staff member we interacted with was respectful, friendly, and genuinely helpful. Check-out was also a breeze—it literally took under three minutes. I’ve stayed here multiple times and have never had a bad experience. East Hotel is definitely my go-to whenever I’m in Canberra. Highly recommended. (1,001 reviews) Pretty good hotel. Though more of a car park above hotel. Like everyone else in Canberra they seem to be obsessed with driving. I know it’s not a very walkable city but I have managed just fine getting around on foot with a little effort. The hotel has super wide hallways, but the rooms are a little narrow. Very trusting hotel so it was nice to be treated like a grown for a change. Great A/C also and the movie selection was a treat. No need to go out in Canberra a night (there’s nothing to do anyway, everyone is too boring). I would recommend it and stay there again.
