Dive off the rocks and plunge into the glassy waters of Matapa Chasm, a beautiful channel flanked by cliffs in Hikutavake. Swim in the waters once used as a bathing pool by Niue royalty, spot schools of tropical fish or simply lie back on the warm rocks that surround the gentle waters of the channel. Take a moment to peer into the deep chasm and imagine the gradual force of the elements that gouged away the rock over thousands of years. Gazing along the oceanfront, you’ll see the degradation of the cliff into the narrow gorge. Those seeking a bit of adventure can clamber up the sides of the canyon and jump into the water from the cliff. Swimming in the sheltered water, you might notice that the water temperature is slightly warmer in the deeper parts of the chasm. This is caused by the cool rainwater that flows onto the water’s surface from the rocks and mixes with the mild seawater.
