Visit the Church of St. Vitus to discover a legacy of art and architecture that dates back almost 700 years. The church was established in the early 1300s by Peter I von Rosenberg. Aristocrats and members of royal families have since added to the structure’s appearance. The church sits on a promontory above the meandering River Vltava and is one of Český Krumlov’s most-visited attractions. Admire the Gothic and Baroque designs of the façade. Notice the huge windows, which rise the entire height of the church’s exterior walls. Gaze up at an eight-sided neo-Gothic tower, added in the 19th century. Inside, the church is adorned with artistic features. Examine the 17th-century Baroque-style high altar to see a painting of the coronation of the Virgin Mary. Look for a sculpture of St. Wenceslas, the patron saint of the Czech Republic, alongside icons of saints such as St. Francis Xavier. Peek inside the Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk, built in 1725 by members of the aristocratic House of Schwarzenberg. At the chapel’s entrance are the tombstones of William of Rosenberg and his wife Anna Maria of Baden. Don’t miss the 15th-century frescoes that depict religious scenes and decorate a wall adjacent to the chapel. At the Resurrection Chapel you’ll find paintings by the Czech painter František Jakub Prokyš. The church is just a short walk from Náměstí Svornosti, the main square in Český Krumlov’s historic center. Visit nearby city attractions including the Egon Schiele Art Centrum and the Regional Museum in Český Krumlov. The Church of St. Vitus is open daily and admission is free. It’s an active place of worship so be respectful of worshippers when visiting. Photography is prohibited inside the church. Classical music concerts often take place in the facilities. (1,003 reviews) The location was the best part of the stay (apart from the breakfast); right in the heart of Old Town and walking distance to everything. Our Uber had to drop us off a very short distance away necessitating us to lug our luggage for 40 secs or so. Not a big deal! Removed 1 star because of a check-in snafu. The room given had 2 single beds (for a couple) because the hotel was fully booked and despite we making the reservations 3 months in advance. The room felt like a converted attic with the beds perpendicular to each other. There wasn't enough space to join them or bring them together. The shower was whole another issue with the showerhead so low that anyone above 5ft7in wouldn't be able to use it properly. We stayed for 2 nights but kept feeling the hotel stiffed us on the room with no compensation / the day manager not even bothering to come and talk to us. The breakfast spread was good and sitting in the room facing the Astronomical Clock Tower was a treat in itself. Would have rated this 7/5 given the history of the building, amenities, location if not for the room issue. Expedia Support was on point and worked with me quickly but they also couldn't do anything.
