History is everywhere in Évora, so of course it makes sense that the University of Évora has a rich past. The university is the beating heart of the town, the place which constantly draws in new young residents. But for tourists, too, there is a lot to see here. Wander its atmospheric cloisters, relax in courtyards with beautiful fountains and admire the details in the university’s well-preserved interiors.

The University of Évora was established in the mid-16th century and was the second university ever to exist in Portugal. Today it incorporates several different buildings throughout Évora, most of which are beautiful and historic. Look for the dove symbol, either carved or in statue form, as this marks out university buildings.

The main building, and probably the most impressive one, is the Colégio do Espírito Santo. Look at this remarkable building and you could easily mistake it for a palace. With grand marble columns and a Baroque façade that is laden with statues and other ornate detailing, this is simply one of Évora’s most elegant buildings.

Step inside to see marvellous interiors such as the one in the Sala dos Atos do Colégio do Espírito Santo. This wonderful space is decorated with traditional tiles dating from the 17th century and also features centuries-old oil paintings.

Also worth visiting is the beautiful library. Look up and see the colorful paintings that adorn the ceiling. These date from the early 18th century. Visit the Sala do Senado to see more captivating historic murals.

Reach the main campus of the University of Évora easily from anywhere within the town’s historic center. Take advantage of its proximity to key tourist attractions and see some of the other interesting sites in the area. Walk to Évora Museum and Évora Cathedral in the north, or visit the pretty Jardim Publico de Évora park immediately to the south. Stay overnight in one of Évora’s many hotels, or come for the day via train from Lisbon.
