#### See if the unusual name fits as you stroll down this iconic cobblestone street and its antique buildings dating back several centuries.

The quaint Street of Sighs is one of the most iconic parts of Colonia del Sacramento’s historic area. This alley has survived intact for many centuries with charming features, such as colorful old buildings, trees and a cobblestone layout. Visit its small shops and ancient houses and enjoy a view of the river on the horizon.

Capture photos of the enchanting street. Admire the colonial buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The painted façades are made from mud and clay, while many roofs are constructed from wood. Green trees and bushes hang over the red-and-yellow walls.

Walk down from the beginning of the street at Plaza Mayor to its end near the river. Enjoy the picturesque views of the trees and the river in the background. Relax in the tranquil ambiance as you consider the lives of the early settlers of Colonia del Sacramento. 

You can see several landmarks from the street, such as the lighthouse and a large Uruguayan flag next to it. Look up at the charming yellow hanging lamps that date back many decades.

Dine at one of the many restaurants in the area. Explore the museums in the historic center to learn more about the colonial era of the city.

The avenue was initially known as Ansina. Legends about how the street got its more famous name include stories centered on love, crime and prostitution. See if you agree that the extraordinary beauty of the street evokes a sigh. 

The Street of Sighs is alongside the majority of Colonia del Sacramento’s most recognizable landmarks in the historic center. Take a 1-mile (1.6-kilometer) walk from the ferry terminal or bus stop through the old drawbridge into the historic center of the city. The street is right next to Plaza Mayor, a central square with several landmarks around it. Visit nearby attractions including the Portuguese Museum, the Museo Municipal and the city’s lighthouse.
