Enjoy beautiful views of rivers, lakes and valley communities as you motor along the skyline drive in the Green Mountain State.

Nature trails and a ridgeline drive with spectacular views run along the forested peak of Mount Equinox. Wildflowers and trees decorate the paths of the imposing mountain, which overlooks lush valleys in the Vermont wilderness. Capture photos of the stunning vista from the summit of this giant rock formation.

Hike the fairly rigorous Mount Equinox trail, which runs for 6.6 miles (10.6 kilometers). Bring poles to help with your balance during the arduous trek. Enjoy a picnic at the summit with a gorgeous backdrop of the valleys. The peak stands at an elevation of 3,848 feet (1,172 meters) above sea level and has picnic areas.

Travel by car along the 5.2-mile (8.4-kilometer) privately owned toll road of Skyline Drive, which is flanked by guard rails to ensure your safety. Use the free parking areas at the peak. Enjoy the western views of the Adirondack, Berkshire and Taconic mountain ranges in the distance. To the east lie the Green Mountains, the Valley of Vermont and the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

Appreciate the views of the iconic Battenkill River that meanders through the mountain’s charming valley communities. Make your way to the Saint Bruno Scenic Viewing Center to learn about the lives of Carthusian monks. Wander through the chapel and marvel at the view from the upper decks. The building has a gift shop selling ecclesiastical items.

Make sure to bring sufficient snacks and water for the trip. Use the trails from morning to late afternoon from the end of May through October. The Skyline Drive has a fee for each vehicle and passenger, although children under 10 can enter for free.

Mount Equinox Skyline Drive begins in the Sunderland area just 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) west of the town of Manchester in the heart of Bennington County in southwestern Vermont. Spend time at nearby sites, such as the Equinox Golf Resort, Battenkill Plaza Shopping Center and the Dana L. Thompson Memorial Park.
