#### Shop for a variety of fresh fish and seafood directly from local fishmongers at a market that stands in the heart of a city centre square.

Interact with the fish traders at the Fish Market (Mercado do Peixe). Watch as restaurant owners arrive to purchase products sold fresh off the boat and engage in buying and selling negotiations. Enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of the square of the Fish Market and spot nearby colonial landmarks.

Today’s octagonal-shaped market building has been serving the Angra dos Reis community since 1914\. Prior to this it was called Banco do Peixe (Fish Bank) and was a collection of makeshift stalls set on the seafront. Fishermen would arrive with their catch and load it straight onto the stalls, where prices were displayed on boards. The area became incorporated into the city center following landfill and the development of Angra dos Reis Port.

Wander between the stalls and observe as the vendors carefully gut and scale their products. If you are staying at self-catering accommodations then this is the ideal place to pick something up and cook to your liking. You’ll find several varieties of fish and seafood, including shrimp. Bar and restaurant chefs carefully select goods to prepare typical Brazilian dishes such as moqueca (fish stew).

The market stands in the center of Zumbi dos Palmares Square. Artisans often hawk regional artwork and handicrafts here. Browse the stalls to find souvenirs. Colonial-style buildings frame the square and some double-up as botecos (bars) and kiosks. It’s also the location for exhibitions, dance performances and live music events.

It’s easy to reach the Fish Market on foot from other city landmarks. Visit Angra dos Reis City Hall on Nilo Peçanha Square. Browse a display of sacred art at the Church of Our Lady da Lapa e Boa Morte. The port and Cais Turistico de Santa Luzia tourist pier are a 10-minute walk away. Parking is available, for a fee, adjacent to the port.

The best time to visit the Fish Market is in the morning when the vendors have the biggest selection of fish.

Stay Dates: Dec 30, 2025 – Jan 2, 2026 Unfortunately, my experience with both the Benidorm Hotel and Expedia was very disappointing. The hotel is undergoing major renovations, which was not disclosed at the time of booking. The property felt messy due to construction, with dust/powder on the floors. Our toilet was loose and unstable; I reported it to reception, but nothing was done. Additionally, both the hotel pool and the gym pool were not working. While access to a pool at the hotel across the street was offered, this was not communicated in advance. Guests should be clearly informed about unavailable amenities before arrival. There was also a serious issue with our reservation. I entered that my child is 13 years old, but upon arrival I was told Expedia listed him as under 5\. Because of this discrepancy, I was charged nearly US$600 extra. When booking, I tried correcting his age, but the system kept reverting to the incorrect information, which was very frustrating. Eventually, the age seemed to be correct but to my surprise, during check-in, it was not! Overall, the lack of transparency, unexpected charges, and unavailable amenities made this a very disappointing experience.

Room was tiny (as expected right here on the beach) but spotless. Most of all, the location is incredible, and the staff incredibly helpful. We had many hours after checking out of our room while waiting the airport, and the staff let us continue to use all the hotel amenities, including the incredible pool and view over Copacabana Beach from the sky deck. Six stars out of five!
