"Great little hotel for an awesome price"
We loved the Palma Real. It was a little out of the way (about 13 miles from Tulum), but the price was very worth it. We had a rental car so it wasn't a big deal. It was hard to find in the dark initially because there are no street lights around, but once you get close, the hotel has a giant green sign that's easy to spot. The room was pretty good sized with tile floors and a comfy California King bed. It was cleaned and the sheets and towels were changed daily. The shower was ok - the water pressure wasn't great, but it was a clean hot shower after each day of doing tourist stuff. This is not a deluxe 5 star hotel - so don't stay here if that's what you want. Tulum has some of the best beaches in the world and the area tends to be more eco-friendly. Hostels are popular here. It is a place to go for the best beach experiences, food, drinks, swimming, snorkeling and awesome people. There are spas around if you want to be pampered. Just don't expect that at the Palma Real. It was exactly what we wanted, however, and we would stay there again. The pool looked nice, but we didn't use it. We stayed here in April and it was quiet and clean. There were some geckos around and it appeared that they were doing some remodeling to the building. All in all, I couldn't be happier with this hotel. This is Mexico - there are police checkpoints, bugs and mold. It's just a part of life. The negative reviews I have read all complain about these things so educate yourself before you go.

"New, clean, cozy comfortable and awesome service!"
We stayed at this hotel for 5days after having spent 2nights at a posada on the beach. The posada was supposed to be the nicest 2nights but we actually loved Xscape much better (and it was half the price)! First of all it is a new construction and everything felt just so clean and new. We had Air Conditioning and in Tulum you need that to sleep comfortable. I never ever sleep with AC and the 2 nights I spent on the beach were awful with all the humidity and the noise from the sea waves and wind. When we went to Xscape we had the best sleep, the AC machine was new and quiet, and the hotel is also in a very quiet area (who doesn't need to have a good sleep on vacation?) The bathroom at the posada on the beach had super salty tap water and no pressure, when we arrived at Xscape the bathrooms were brand new and water pressure was excellent. Another plus was arriving to the hotel in the evening and have a swim in the pool or relax in the comfortable sun beds reading a book or socialising. The other guests of the hotel were nice crowd and we made lots of friends there. The best of all was the owner Max that was super attentive at all times, he would go out of his way to please his customers. And it's only 10min drive to the beach or you can ride bicycle, there is bike path from Tulum to the beach. I think its worth saving extra bucks in the hotel and be comfortable in upgraded rooms in the town, don't waist your money in over prized beach hotels, you pay double for less!

"A nice apartment complex near the edge of Tulum"
A 60-90 minute drive from CUN airport (depending on traffic), the place hard to find (neither the cab driver nor any locals knew the location by name, and the location is new enough that there are not street addresses). In the management's defense, they had sent us a nice diagram of where exactly the complex was located, but we underestimated how difficult it would be to find. We spent one night in our original room, but after discovering that the AC was not working, we were moved into another unit that had a working AC. Luckily, that unit was also a bit nicer, and we were very pleased with the relocation. We rented a very nice pair of bikes from the management for a very reasonable price, and due to them not being available on day 1, we were given the first few days free as well. Tulum's main drag was about 5 minutes away on bike, and the beach was approximately a 30 minute bike ride from our apartment (all on either quiet streets or the bike path). We would definitely recommend bikes, as the apartments are a little far for walking. All in all, it was a very pleasant experience, although honestly the apartment was a bit big for our needs. There was another group of 2-3 couples that was also staying there at the same time, and that seemed like the ideal use of the space: plenty of room in the apartments, and lots of room and facilities for group activities.

"Quiet, family friendly hotel on edge of town"
Our family of four had a wonderful six night stay at Villas H2O in April 2015. We drove down in a rental car from Cancun. It's on the edge of town a couple of blocks into a dirt road off of the main drag so we'd recommend a car or willingness to take a taxi a lot. Free parking is right in front. Very quiet at night and the pool is right there in front of the rooms. The pool is good for all ages, open at all hours (really!). Breakfast in the morning: delicious fresh fruit plate with toast and fresh squeezed orange juice with optional, very reasonably priced eggs available. The eating area was under a partially open thatched roof structure right by the pool which was also available for use for take-out lunch or dinner (try pizza from "Manglar" a few minutes walk / drive away). Purified water (do not drink from the tap in Tulum) was available in the eating area at all hours. The staff, available from about 8am-10pm, were as friendly and helpful as could be, giving good advice on hyper-local matters like "arrive at Chichen Itza as early as possible to avoid crowds" and "don't park right on the road by the beach because your car will be towed" as well as excellent restaurant suggestions for our vegetarian family. Our room was huge by American or European standards. It had a decent sized refrigerator which was very handy with kids (e.g. for milk).

"A beautiful sanctuary in Tulum!"
My son and I were amazed when we pulled up to the gated entrance all in tile and entered a plaza with hanging planters and flowers, and architecture fitting a Mexican palace...we felt like royalty and were astounded that the nightly price is so reasonable. The staff is so friendly and accommodating and all the little extras like coffee 24 hours a day and towel animals to greet us on our return to our cleaned rooms...such luxury!!! Thank you to all the staff for making our stay in Tulum so wonderful!!!
