St Paul's Church (as it was called) was finished and consecrated in 1866, built to a design by Rev Frederick Thatcher. It served as the parish church for the suburb of Thorndon and as the Wellington Cathedral until the 1960's when a new modern cathedral was built. Once the new cathedral was finished it was proposed to demolish this church, but growing public protest led to the NZ Government purchasing the property and placing it under the umbrella of the NZ Historic Places Trust.
