This Guesthouse is a little Gem tucked away in the heart of the city but without the noise. Property was extremely clean, with all the necessities needed for a great stay. Room was perfect and breakfast was really good. The grounds were well kept and clean. Prices are very affordable. Check in was seamless with Fernando. Nothing requested was too much - All staffs were very accommodating. Breakfast included - prepared fresh and cooked to order upon arrival at the restaurant. The Owner Mr. Henderson was extremely personable and greeted all guests. We enjoyed our time there although too short. If you’re looking for affordable prices, a quiet place, superb service then this little Gem is ideal for your stay. We will definitely stay again. Thank you for a phenomenal stay and the outstanding customer service that was provided by all staffs that we encountered during our stay.

People are very helpful. Breakfast was delicious. Rooms are simple, but clean and comfortable. Living area is beautiful. Receptionnists were amazing. They helped me with the rest of my trip. For the price, it's perfect.

This place was nice for an overnight state for an early flight. I saw other reviews online and booked it for that same reason. It is quaint, old, but very unique and comfortable. Within walking distance of numerous restaurants, and the staff was very accommodating.

Had a wonderful two night stay here recently. The staff was courteous and Carlos was very informative and kind. There’s a bit of a learning curve with the shower but I think that’s Costa Rica plumbing in general. I made a mistake by not reading the room description properly so our room did not have ac but totally my mistake not the property’s. However, our windows opened and at night it was very cool out so it wasn’t a problem at all. The breakfast here was so good and the property itself was really cute and cozy and only about 12 mins or so from SJO. We definitely would stay here again.

everyone was so kind, breakfast was excellent, Carlitos and Fernando were so nice both are excellent host, location is perfect if you don’t rent a car most of the local restaurants are to a walking distance and not far from the airport. We were so pleased with everything that will recommend and we hopefully come back soon.

Alajuela City Hotel & Guest House made our trip! Through preserving its wooden ceilings, gorgeous doors, and courtyard full of plants (and signs for their varieties), it is obvious that the staff takes lots of pride in the history and upkeep of this building. We had to leave at 3:15AM for our flight, and even though we missed the included breakfast later that morning, a to go stack of homemade goods for our travels were prepared for us ahead of time, so thoughtful! Another plus — they are able to organize a shuttle for you. Lovely facilities, and even more lovely staff! Would stay here all over again.

The property is old (decor, furnishings etc) but not in a bad way. It’s quaint with good bones. The best feature for me is the cleanliness.. dust free, comfortable sleeping, bed and linens were fresh and much detail taken on sanitary bathrooms and surfaces you touch. I actually didn’t use my travel pillowcase which blew my mind bc I don’t put my face down on foreign pillows. The breakfast is included with the stay, and it was delicious, a nice hearty portion a traditional Costa Rican, breakfast. Everyone is courteous, and I have the opportunity to meet the owner. He was a delight. The only thing a little offputting to me was the area but once you’re inside, it’s great.

Affordable, clean rooms, staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Helped me arrange a middle of the night can to the airport which worked flawlessly. Would definitely stay again especially when I’m need of a short stay close to the airport (10 minutes).

This property is conveniently placed next to the airport. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Also, we didn’t realize we booked the guest house, sharing the bathroom with other guest was different for us. But we were only there for a few hours. It wasn’t bad!

I love this place. First time staying here, Warmth welcome by the staff. Clean room, quiet place, eclectic garden. Will come back. I have already recommended this place to many people who are traveling to Costa Rica.

Juan Carlos was very friendly to deal with at the front desk. I think they only had one parking spot but he directed to us to a place around the corner. He was up all night in case we needed any assistance. Breakfast was tasty.

We loved the history and quaintness of this property. Also, it was close to the local community and shopping, etc. Our first night in room 7 was nice. There is no air-conditioning, but it cools off later and there are ceiling fans. Room 6 had a shared bathroom which was okay. But no hot water in the sinks and the shower was cold in the morning. But wonderful staff. Would I return there? Yes…

Hotel was cute. Staff was wonderful. We got in super late and were greeted and helped so effortlessly. The breakfast was simple but absolutely delicious. We stayed in room 1 beside the front door so it was a little loud with people coming in and out but it was a great place.

Good place to start your trip
I stayed 2 nights, one in a private bath and one shared bath. The rooms are nice, lots of restaurants within 1-5 blocks, beautiful courtyard where they serve breakfast, generally helpful staff in an 80 year old Spanish style building. They were able to book a private tour to poas for me the following day at a very reasonable price - half the cost of listed package tours (tour recommended!) and they work with other groups too on day tours all over. Only negative is that it is a but noisy at night from the hallway/ courtyard as there is no AC so you need to keep your windows open to get some air.

1. Hard to find and drive streets of Alejuela at night! WAZE app was useless. Many one way, narrow streets and the water flood channels are DEEP, dangerous and unforgiving. Scary neighborhood especially asking directions after dark. 2. Hotel is one step above youth Hostel. No room insulation. Door are not bolted or secure. Dark dingy, old, creaky wood hotel. 3. Noisy! Room doors adjoin hallway reception area. You will know when every guest checks in/out and walks down hallway. 4. No onsite parking. You have to drop off luggage then go park your car. Scetchy after dark. Repeat to check out.PITA and expensive! We paid $12 :( 5. Free breakfast is like a snack. Maybe 1.5 scrabled eggs. No seconds. You will need to eat again in an hour. 6. Initially, booked reservation for first/last day to be convenient to airport. BTW, this is 20 min from San Jose airport--not convenient at all. As soon as I saw sparten, basic room, I tried to cancel last day (9daysaway). My friend spoke Spanish, and we were unable to clearly understand if he canceled. Expedia is still showing and won't let me cancel. 7. Back to rooms. I couldnt believe the room had no A/C! No table or outlet next to bed. Expect to walk across room to use charging phone. Bathroom has no room/shelf for personal toiletries. Stupid! I am not an ugly American. I do not expect much especially when looking for budget rooms. But, I feel compelled to write honestly about Aljuela City Hotel. Any review higher than 3 stars is delusional.

Unfortunately the busy street, lack of parking, noise inside the hotel from breakfast being swrved right outside our room and the cleanliness of the room really diminished our experience and impression. It wasn’t quite what I expected. Would have likely just done something closer to the airport.

Pros: The staff at this property are truly remarkable. So friendly and engaging. When we checked in and we’re shown our room we were given the history of the building which was fascinating. The area is very walkable with a lot of dining and shopping. Cons: water pressure in our room was almost nil. Hard to even brush your teeth. Gigantic cockroach in our bed woke us up at 1 am.

We had to stay one night near the airport. Great value. Very clean. We had to use a shared bathroom that could use some updating, but again very clean. Room was compact but very comfortable. Plus it included breakfast. Which was delicious. Staff was very helpful in finding transportation and recommendations. Cute little courtyard inside. Would recommend.

Convenient location near the airport, really helpful and friendly customer service they went above and beyond to get us transportation to the next city that we were heading to. We came back the last day and they storage our suitcases while we went around town because our flight was at midnight and they allow us to use the installations to take a shower and provide us with towels for a small fee. The day that we stayed there we got a room with it’s own bathroom, but it is also a great place for solo or bigger groups that get to share the bathrooms and shower really clean and comfortable.
