Quinta Avenida is great for a day or two for food. Souvenirs, and food are significantly cheaper on surrounding areas like 10th Ave. One drink on Quinta Avenida is the equivalent of a meal for 2 on 10th.
Quinta is great, full of life but beware of the kiosks selling tours. Most are thieves and if you do book a tour do not pay the full amount, offer to pay a deposit then pay the balance before boarding the tour because otherwise you might be given a fake ticket then never get your money back even if you get the police involved
There are some nice, quiet shops on the north end of the avenue like Iconos Mayas. Leave the main strip for a quieter walk, restaurants and grocery store.
if it's sunny, wear a hat. Not alot of shade. Bring pesos instead of USD as it gives you bargaining power
You can enjoy the entertainment at Calle 12 during your travels to Playa del Carmen. While in this walkable area, you can savor the bars and restaurants.
