Historic, iconic, artistic but ultimately ordinary

Posted 6-Sep-2014
Pros: The staff were all wonderful. The porters, receptionists & bar staff were excellent.
Cons: The complimentary wifi was only accessible in the bathroom. The breakfast in La Rotonde was a scrum. Brick up ALL connecting doors.
Location: Great beach club opposite (Neptune Plage) for breakfast, lunch, sun beds etc
It's the world famous Negresco. If you tell friends you are staying in Nice; those in the know ask if you're staying at the Negresco. It's nice to say "we are". This was our ninth trip to Nice but our first stay at the Negresco. We had booked a superior room which was similar in price to the Meditereanee Hotel and a little cheaper than the Boscolo Exedra. The Negresco looks amazing outside and in. The walls of the lobby and central atrium are clad in paintings (mostly of the owner) and there are beautiful statues, objet d'art and furniture everywhere. However, ultimately your room is what you are paying for and ours was ordinary. Not small, not big. No wonderful little luxuries that can make 5* hotels addictive. The TV was on the fridge, neither were built into the furniture. Our bin was removed on day 1 and never seen again. We had an adjoining door to the next room (do people really request these rooms) which nullified any privacy my wife and I were going to have as we could hear every word our neighbours said (they were not shouting, just chatting.) The whole thing just made us feel a bit deflated. There was no chance to move room as we had been assured the hotel was full to bursting as we arrived at reception.

Iconic hotel in Cote D'Azur

Posted 25-Aug-2014
Having stayed at the Negresco last year in the standard room, we opted for a deluxe sea view only to find a similar view to the previous visit with a less spacial feel to it also. I expressed this to the hotel wjo simply said they were full. On the last night a strong sewage smell emerged from the antique bathroom and again we found the response from the hotel the following day disappointing. The fact they did not even ask how our stay was spoke volumes - we won't be returning. We did obtain a good price through Expedia however.

Very nice staff, but it's all talk! Slow to respond. Rooms are in need of proper renovations. This is only rated 5 stars because of the location, architecture and common areas. The rooms are disappointing. We were moved twice (3 rooms), superior rating. All were much less than expected of a 5 star hotel.

Fabulous, unique and historic hotel.

Posted 23-Aug-2014
Pros: The history, the staff, the superb layout, artwork etc
Cons: Very little
Location: Right opposite the mediteranean sea just off the boulevard des Anglais.
We've stayed at The Negresco several times. It's truly unique. The staff were excellent as ever. The room was superb. The new bar is quite noisy until late on and the cocktail lounge was perhaps lacking a little atmosphere but otherwise everything was excellent.

Hotel with stories, myths, quality and... art.

Posted 1-Aug-2014
Pros: Amount and quality of art from different eras and styles is just impressive...
Cons: Room specific temperature and air con could be adjusted only by calling to the reception.
High quality hotel; excellent location, premises & service. Our floor (5th) recently (2012) renewed. Every floor represents different era in history & art, including Napoleon & 1800 Europe, Chinese with Ming Dynasty era, Art Deco floor. In 5-star category, we got a reasonable price even with full sea view & small balcony, well competing with 5-star hotels in Cannes nearby. Hint: do not use lifts, use massive staircases to move around - it is like walking through the historical art exhibition :-)
