“Vintage?”

I have stayed at the El Cortez on several occasions and I did not know of the "vintage" rooms until arriving. Afterwards I finally found the definition of "vintage" on their website stating of the 1940's feel and stair access above the casino. This was tough since I injured my knee and the desk persons only solution was to call security to help carry my bag up the stairs. Even though the room was non-smoking, the air from the casino came up the stairs and into the room. I will stay there again because overall the rooms are nice, clean and comfortable, but if you have mobility issues or allergies/respiratory sensitivities I would not recommend the "vintage" rooms.

Area recommendations
I recommend the Fremont St. area because I like the closer proximity of the casinos and restaurants. Also the outdoor entertainment and easy access to the freeway.

“This place is Meh...”

The front desk was kind of rude, but still helpful. Maid service was very friendly. The main hotel is a little run down, but their cabbana suites looked nice. You get what you paid for. The night life at el cortez was a bust but its right off of freemont and the freemont experience section. Neighberhood at night reminded me of sunset blvd. A variety of crazies, homeless and party ppl. It wasnt scary but dont walk alone.

“El Cortez - cheap and adequate”

Stayed 4 nights at this hotel in a Pavillion room. Was looking for cheap accommodation in a reasonable location and this was perfectly adequate. Our room was close to the parking garage and it felt safe and secure moving between the two. It is an old hotel, so it feels dated and a bit shabby in parts, but the rooms were well cleaned and comfortable. The only negative was the stained grouting around the bath, but the water supply was hot and plentiful. Only ate at the Cafe Cortez (again to save money), and for burger dinners and stir fry at USD7 a meal, you get what you pay for.

Area recommendations
For the same price we also stayed at Continental Suites. This is a simple motel, but with newly decorated rooms. The location is not so attractive, but the staff were very friendly and the rooms were more modern and with the most comfortable beds of the trip. Also had free wifi and continental breakfast. Parking is off the main strip, directly outside the front and rear of the motel unit , but not secured.

“The Price is right!!!!”

The room was kind of small, but for the price that we paid, it was good enought for us, plus we only need the room to sleep for a couple of hours, beacuse in VEGAS you don't really sleep.

“Enjoyed the stay”

The hotel is located a couple blocks from the Fremont Street Experience, and multiple RTC bus stops. There's also a Walgreens and a Starbucks nearby. The mexican/cuban restaurant across the street is amazing, and the pizza joint down the street is great, as well. As for the hotel itself, it's a great place for the price. The slots here are much looser than most of the other hotels, they have $3 craps, $3 blackjack, and $1-3 max limit Texas Hold'Em. I'm not a high roller, so this was right up my alley. My only real complaint is the drink service. The cocktail waitresses don't come by very often, and I had a couple of them forget my drink.

“Bad News”

Well, where do I start first off the stair well from the parking lot of the old hotel stunk like mold and cat urine, Then they gave me a non smoking noisy room on top of the stairs on the second floor and it smelled like smoke like the casino, My door key card or lock took like 4 times each time i wanted in to the room. The room was not very well lit two forty watt bulbs for the whole room, the floor were uneven a creeked like a haunted house , the bathroom was very small, and where they had the tolit was in between the wall and the sink and you better be a small person to fit in there, oh yah the lid did not stay up for men. oh they had a news paper in the ceiling to block off a vent about 2x2 feet so you could read in bed if you could see a little better with the bad lighting , oh also the coffee maker did not work the outlet did not so i had to move it, very limited nite menu,

“El cortez in Fremont St in Vegas”

Its an older hotel, but I knew that when I made the reservation. The only real complaint was the ventelation in it. The cigarette smoke was exessive and wasnt ventelated properly. I realise its and older hotel but the others on fremont didnt have this problem. Our room was clean and very nice. If I wanted high end, I would have stayed at the strip. I stayed in the tower.

“Awesome decorating!”

The Cabana Suites were awesome. The decorating in the building is the most unique I've ever seen. You do have to carry your room card to get into the building in addition to your room because it's seperate from the main casino hotel part. The bonus coupon book they gave us was nice. It gave free gambling money and money off at the resaturant. The restaurant was a bit of a downer though. Most of the entrees are expensive and don't include sides. And it costs extra to share an entree. You end up paying for two whole meals even if you want to share with someone. If felt like we were being ripped off. It was more expensive than just going down to Fremont for something equivalent to eat. It does have a Subway inside the main hotel though which was a cheap and close option.

Area recommendations
Fremont and the Strip. Both have lots of things to do at any time of the day or night.

“Great value for the money!”

If you're going to book here, by all means book one of the Cabana Suites. Not that much more expensive, and well worth the few xtra $$. It was very quiet, too. The only thing I didn't like was the operation of the air conditioner/heater. The air conditioner was not a great one, as it didn't hold the temperature like it was supposed to. Also, the person sleeping on the side of the bed next to the thing got air blowing right on their face. Could have been avoided if the room had been arranged differently. All in all though...the room was clean and very nice, and well worth the extra money. The hotel is located at the end of of the Freemont Street Experience (which is awesome), and is an easy walk to that part of Vegas. To get to the Strip, you'll need to ride the bus.

Area recommendations
If you want to pay a bunch more money to stay at one of the hotels/casinos on the strip, then by all means, do. But, if you want to stay in an affordable hotel and be able to enjoy your Vegas stay a bit more, then this is the place.
Getting around
Unless you want to spend a fortune on cabs, you'll need to get a buss pass. Unlimited rides - 3 days - $20 vs. one cab ride to one place (of course, depending on where you're going to/from - lots of $$! The bus can get a tad crowded, and you might have to wait a bit for the bus to get to your stop, but you'll need to weigh the options for yourself.
Events and shows
Tournament of Kings dinner show at the Excalibur! Too much fun (and a great meal)!
