Lots of Bibles, Christian Music, and Bible Quotes
The room was nice, and the bed was very comfortable. The parking is tight if you are driving a truck. There are bibles on all of the dining tables and in the rooms, there are non-Gospel bible quotes on the walls in the common areas, and there is Christian music playing in the common room at all times. You are expected to clean and put up all of your dishes, and you will have to make your own coffee before 7:30 am. The elevation is about 1,200 feet if you are planning on scuba diving.

Aloha Helena,We are sincerely glad that you got to enjoy your nice room, and we always love to hear how much our guests love our room beds. Yes, we do have Bibles on some of our tables and in the rooms. We do appreciate that our guests clean up any dishes that they use so that the kitchen is always clean for any guests who want to use it. I always put the 100% Kona coffee in the coffee maker the night before, so whoever gets up first can push the "brew now" button on the coffee maker to get the coffee brewed. I get up at around 7:15 to make it if it's not already made by then. We are at 850 feet elevation and our guests have no problem with any scuba activity. 3 of my sons are scuba divers.Thank you for staying with us?

Stunning location and facility - super friendly proprietors. Only complaint? Abundant bibles, scripture verses and christian Muzak throughout could be unpleasant for the majority of travelers that do not like being preached to while on holiday.

Eric, we sincerely love our guests, and it is truly an honor to serve them here at Hale Maluhia Country Inn, giving them our best, in this beautiful property. And yes, it is because we are so loved by our Lord that we can sincerely say again, from our hearts, that we love you and your wife. We do have Bibles in our property, for the Word of God is powerful and so beautiful, but we never force it on anyone or is ever our intention to cause you, or anyone, to feel unpleasant. It is up to you if you decide to read it or even grab it. But we are abundantly blessed to personally read it daily and desire to pray for you and for all of our guests. The Christian music, mostly instrumental, is only played in our main Welcoming Room. We hope you and your wife are enjoying a beautiful day. It surely is a beautiful one here in Kona! Much love to you both!

Such a beautiful, cozy, small spot hidden in the foothills of the Kona side of the big island. The owners are an absolute treat, the property is paradise, and the location is unbeatable. Despite being in a convenient location, I wouldn't recommend this place. There are dogs that howl and bark at night and early morning nearby and roosters that will wake you up before sunrise. The windows do not close fully. There are ear plugs near the bedside, but these do little to help. The hot water is also very inconsistent. The first night the water was lukewarm at best. We stayed 4 nights and had varying levels of hot water. This property is more like an Airbnb. I was charged a 'cleaning fee' without any notification. I needed to reach out to the host to figure out what the new fee was. No receipt, notice, or invoice shared with me.
Response from Dave & Miriam on Jan 19, 2023
Aloha Lei,We are trying to understand your review, especially about your comments, which are contrary to the text you sent us upon your departure stating "Hi Dave - we just checked out and left the keys in the door. Thanks for great stay!". Yes, we are in a very convenient location, near the airport, beaches, downtown Kona, etc. The whole time you were here, you never brought any of these issues to our attention. As we live on the property and you had our contact, why didn't you inform us of these things while you were here? Regarding the windows, they do fully close, so we are not sure why you would say that they don't. As we live in the country, up the mountainside, there are going to be animal noises. Most people love the authentic nature we have up here. If you had told us you were having issues with the hot water, I would have been able to fix it while you were still here. In regards to the 30 plus tax stained linens fee, we did notify you of the charge and explained to you the reason why. Upon your departure, the linens from one of the two beds in your room had many dark stains. We treated the stains and washed the linens several times. We sincerely tried our best to remove the stains to avoid the charge or any inconvenience to you. We even had them professionally steam cleaned, but nothing worked. That's when I sent you the notice and this was your response to the reason why the stains were there: "It is from a clear cortizone cream that will wash out with soap and water." As we mentioned before, we sincerely tried our best to remove the stains, but were not able to. To our surprise, just a few minutes after we sent you our notification in regards to the stained linens and received your response about it being caused by the cortizone cream, we then received this review from you. Again, this review was truly a surprise to us since you texted thanking us for "a great stay!".The Lord bless you both.

The property looks exactly - if not better - than in the photos. Usually, we are looking for oceanside apartments, but this was a much better option. Especially, on the Big Island. It is still close to the beaches and downtown Kona, but the place is magical - lush vegetation, wooden cabins, great view. Your spouse or family will thank you for picking this place. Mine did.

Not For Everyone
This is a very unusual property. Essentially a large house with a number of out buildings that was built as an inn, it feels more like a family compound that was cobbled together. The big drawing card is its proximity to Kona-Kailua. You can get to the main part of town in than 10 minutes. It is located above town where it is a bit wetter, so it has a lush feel. Unfortunately, after that the negatives pile up: * It is on a small winding road that is fairly busy. It’s location right in the middle of sharp curve means road noise comes from both above and below the property. Family and guest noise was prominent. Ear plugs offered on the bedside table were a troubling sign. * Because it is in the wetter region, our room had a musty smell that left us congested after each night. * THIS IS NOT A COVID-SAFE PROPERTY. Neither the owners nor guests observed any COVID precautions. * This is a property that wears its religious convictions on its sleeve, with many bible sayings displayed prominently. Normally this would be a comfort, but in combination with the attitudes towards masking and the large American flag at the entry to property, there was no mistaking the attitudes of the owners. This is the first place we have ever felt uncomfortable because of the divisions in the US. Between being uncomfortable physically and socially, this was without question our least favorite stay on the Island. We can not recommend it.

Response from Dave and Miriam on Jan 31, 2022
Aloha Joseph, First, we want to thank you for your stay with us, and we sincerely hope that you are doing well. As for your comments, we wish to respond back to you, by beginning with a brief description of our property you have called "very unusual". We would say "it is very unique". The Inn consists of three main buildings, very distinguished from one another. Sitting on almost one acre of land, this property has its own beautiful tropical setting. I wouldn't describe it as a "family compound cobbled together". Guests' noises have never been an issue that has been complained about here, as we have always been blessed by respectful considerate guests. Each room offers our guests earplugs for we have coqui frogs that delight us with their melody each night, which is called a unique experience by most of our guests. It is humid in Hawaii, and here in Kailua-Kona, known as the drier side of the island, we are in a unique area where it is cooler. Whenever we get rain, we may enjoy the aroma of it outdoors, but it didn't even rain here during your stay. Your room has plenty of ventilation, does not have any musty smell, and it was never, even once, brought to our attention while you were here about any musty smell, so perhaps your congestion came from another source. As for your capitalized opinion in regards to the safety of our property, we must disagree. First of all, you were given a deep cleaned, sanitized room, for that's how we welcome everyone here for their stay. Our buildings are open-air, and your room had an outdoor private entry and lanai. We don't see too many guests wearing masks outdoors, and we don't recall seeing you wearing one either. You made no mention of this at all while here, and we had no discussions with you regarding masks or any other current events. So we are not sure how you claim to know our views about any of these things. Yes, we are Christians, saved by the Grace and Mercy of our Lord and Savior Jesus who loves sinners like us. We love you and everyone here for we have been blessed by Him, beyond words. There are several Scriptures displayed on our Property, including Bibles in each room. We pray they bless your heart, and that you find joy and His Peace in your life. Next, how can you proclaim in this letter that you know our attitudes about anything because we have a large American flag at the entrance of our property? We are very respectful, loving, and considerate people, and adding to this, very proud to be Americans. I (Miriam) must add this to our reply: the American Flag means so much to me. I love the USA so much. Born in Ecuador, I became an American Citizen in 1996, and learning about the history of this Nation, how this Great Nation began, the Patriotism of our Founding Fathers, and the heroism of many who has fought for the cause of our Freedom (that you and I enjoy), has caused my heart great respect and Honor for my Country. Our American Flag stands for freedom for all people, and I am very honored

Cozy, comfy way to be welcomed to Hawaii
Such a great stay in the Banyan Cottage. Spacious with a comfy bed. Hearing the coqui frogs was a great way to be welcomed to Hawaii! The tub was nice (it would have been nice to know that the hot and cold water were the opposite directions as accustomed to). The property is lush and beautiful! The hosts are so very kind and accommodating. The listing needs to inform the traveler that there is access to a full kitchen and that some of the windows don't close all the way. The location is very convenient to touristy restaurants and shopping. Overall, a great place for a couple, or a throuple, to stay. Mahalo!

The owners were very nice and helpful, and responded quickly to resolvable issues. The bed and bathroom were pretty clean. However, the property really needs a total update - carpet was very old and visibly dirty, and the room felt dusty in general. Because of the location, the room was always somewhat damp, with no AC or dehumidifier available, so the towels and swimming suits never dry and tend to stink; blinds don’t work and our privacy was kept by very thin curtains. You can hear every noise: loud frogs and crickets, roosters before 5am, and cars driving around three sides of the property. Parking is difficult as the property is on a small lot on a hairpin turn in a mountain road. The smoke alarm in the room went off twice for no reason while we were there, the owner had to replace it with a different unit. We didn’t use the shared kitchen so no comment on that. Overall it provided a bed and a bathroom in a safe area, but wasn’t ideal due to the reasons above.

We stayed in Maile Room. This is a nice property, and the host is very responsive and welcoming. One major thing to BEWARE: the bed is very firm, squeaky and uncomfortable, especially for side sleepers. Pillows are limited and not suitable for side sleepers as well. It is not just my opinion, my wife and I stayed in three different places on the Big Island, and this is the first time we had this issue. It is really something that can be fixed for the future guests, especially for the price of the stay. Otherwise this is a nice place, clean and well decorated room, beautiful property surroundings. Access to a hot tub is a bonus as well.

"You dont sound like a Frog, " she said, and was fast asleep in our new King Size bed. Breakfast was a tour of food. Yummy and Fresh. Jim and Sandy

Aloha Jim & Sandy, It was really great having you guys here in our Banyan Cottage. You know that you can record the frog sound on your phone. You can even make it your ring tone. The coqui frogs always celebrate Valenintes Day! We look forward to seeing you again then.

Out of the city with beautiful grounds. Has a great jungle atmosphere with a variety of birds all around. If you don’t want to be woke up at 6:08 AM by a whinny child next door coming through your window, this is not the place for you. There are very over powering air fresheners in the room that could work for an entire house. Very friendly host, beautiful place just not very peaceful.

Aloha Kari, So sorry to hear that the neighbor's child woke you up on the morning that you were here. I apologize if the air freshener in your room wasn't pleasant to you. I hope you had the opportunity to unplug it. It is our desire that all of our guests experience a peaceful atmosphere. We are truly sorry that yours was not during your 1-night stay here. Mahalo.
