Štúrovo is the town on the Slovak side of the border, which has an ethnic Hungarian majority. On a small hill overlooking the town and the Danube is a Cathedral, which is the largest in Hungary, and the site at which the Hungarian king Vajk (Szent István) was baptised. The adjacent castle complex is also worth a look. You can easily get here by bus or train from Budapest. Alternatively, you can take a train to Štúrovo which is on the main line between Budapest and Bratislava. The welcome from the female receptionist on the afternoon of the 22nd was excellent. ​The Cons: ​Mediocre cleanliness: I found a hair on the duvet in the first room. In the second room, the bathtub was dirty with stagnant water residue, which I had to scrub myself before using. ​Customer Service (Dec 23rd): The attitude of the male receptionist on duty the morning of my departure was deplorable. I asked for assistance with the luggage storage, but his reception was icy. Despite my greetings and repeated thanks, he remained completely silent and unfriendly. Such a lack of basic courtesy is unacceptable."
