![The castle stands on the site of a historic Slavic settlement, where an original stone castle was built from the end of the 13th century. The current castle is the result of reconstruction in the years 1719-1730 under the princes of Dietrichstein. The end of World War II meant a complete disaster for the castle, as German troops leaving the city set it on fire.
During the war, the anthropological collection from the Moravian Museum of Zemstvo was moved to Mikulov Castle for preservation.
After extensive reconstruction in the 1950s, the castle became the seat of the Regional Museum in Mikulov, which houses art and historical collections, including exhibits related to the history of local wine production. The exhibition presents a Renaissance wine barrel, built in 1643 and one of the largest, 1,014 hectoliters (22,300 imp.
