![Designed by John S. Norris for General Hugh Weedon Mercer, construction of the house began in 1860. Construction was interrupted by the American Civil War, and finally completed around 1868 by the new owner, John Wilder. 

Before Hansford's death, as retold in Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, the house had already been the scene of two deaths. In 1913, a previous owner tripped over the second floor banister, fractured his hip, and suffered a concussion, dying three days later. "Staff was nice and accommodating. The floors were uneven in my room but added to its charm and did not affect my stay. I didn’t see the pool but used the gym which was clean. The biggest challenge was parking. If you park in public spot, if you can find a spot, it is free on Sunday. Otherwise, it can be hard to find a place, and other than Sunday there is no free parking that I knew of. Would stay here again."
