The first version had to be scrapped early in this century when it was discovered that cracks running through it would eventually lead to its collapse. It's a young bridge, only seven years old, in fact, but it comes with all the amenities. It should, it cost $43 million to build. But it will last the county many, many years. The first few hours of its history were some of the most exciting. It was floated into place right down the Multnomah Channel, part of a series of such rapid-replacement events throughout the state during that year. This is the bridge you take to get to the trails at Warrior Point and Oak Island, two of the places from which I've posted discoveries in the past. There's a lot more to do on that island besides chase after wildlife -- farm fresh fruit stands, country stores, bike paths, beaches. It's a real gem, more or less in the heart of this great Pacific Northwest metropolis.
