"Very nice hotel, but rooms are sparce"
Beautiful, but shallow on functionality. No place to put things in bath room, for example. Must lay clothing, etc., on floor. Only one chair in room.

"Quiet hotel despite proximity to city centre"
Short break to visit city centre of historic Edinburgh. Short easy walk into town and very close to theatre. Being tucked in behind Surgeons' Hall removed the traffic noise and bussle.

"Charming small hotel, great staff."
Charming small hotel, with really great staff. The Butlers were always happy to help whether with unpacking, drinks or simply a chat. My room was advertised as one of the "petit" ones - perfect as I was travelling alone but probably a little small for two. The decor was a little dated in places, but in many ways part of the charm. A lovely small hotel in the new town!

"Ideal location for couple of days break"
Good facilities and very spacious.beds are not as comfy as hoped. Really disappointed that the double room requested had twin beds put together. No balcony and no real views to talk about as we were only 1 floor up. Stained covered cream colour carpet as soon as you walk in! Ask for a room higher up and facing canal!

Arrived to meet friendly staff that helped us to our clean, well presented room. Breakfast was of great, with plenty of options. Massage in the spa was amazing too! Highly recommended!

The lighting in the room could be improved and it's impossible to lower the temperature in the room sufficiently to overcome the heating system. The staff is amazingly helpful and goes out of their way without looking for a tip!

"Lovely little hotel "
We really loved our stay. We realized early on that the hotel had actually once served as a hospital, which was pretty cool. My boyfriend and I didn't require a lot of frills because we were out all day from rising to turning in. We thought the hotel staff was very courteous and helpful, the room was clean and the bathroom was really nice. It was in short walking distance to Grassmarket, and up to the Royal Mile if you figure out which closes to take ;) Also good walking distance to some good breakfast spots like Cafe Class, Mum's, etc.

"Beautiful and worth the splurge"
We splurged. We're so happy we did. There is something exciting about staying in THAT hotel in any city, the one that stands out and makes people wonder, "What is THAT building?" The room was beautiful, with a large white marble bathroom and the most comfortable bed we slept on in weeks. But the little things are also fun: the nightly turndown with the little card that tells you tomorrow's weather, the free fancy water when we arrived, the doorman, the big fancy staircase with stained glass windows, the art, the fresh flowers in the lobby--that kind of stuff. The train station is literally right beside/underneath the hotel (we didn't hear train noise at all, but our friends did, just a heads-up) so was extremely convenient, and you are just steps from Old Town. Breakfast was pricey but very high-quality with unusual items for the taking. It's expensive for sure, all the way around. But it's also really, really fun.
