![Altausee is a small village set in a beautiful valley on the shores of Lake Altausee. This is the heart of Austria, and close to the centre point of the mountainous country. The village of less than 2,000 inhabitants is picture postcard perfect, with well maintained wooden houses, almost all bedecked with flower boxes and hanging baskets. Not a country to live in if you don't have green fingers, I feel! On Sunday, the locals mostly wear their best leaderhosen, trachten jackets and 
dirndls, creating a scene straight out of the Sound of Music. "A great place to stay with stunning views. There's a bus stop at the entrance so it's easy to get to Dachstein Krippenstein and Hallstatt. There's also a wharf close by with two transport options. The mini-market in the resort is well stocked with plenty of options for self-catering. The staff were very friendly and helpful and restaurant food was excellent."

"We stayed at the Tiny House, which was not only super cute but also very comfortable and had everything we needed for a perfect weekend. The place is amazing — nestled in the mountains and close to the lake, it felt like being in a fairy tale.
