The Blue Mountains

Travel Guide
Blue Mountains featuring a gondola and a garden
Mountains, beaches and plenty of outdoor activities await visitors to this southern Canadian town on the shores of Georgian Bay.

On the banks of Canada’s Georgian Bay is the town of Blue Mountains, a popular destination for lovers of outdoor pursuits and breathtaking scenery. It is where you can take part in winter sports at superb mountain resorts, relax on golden sand beaches, play watersports and explore picturesque coastal trails. The town is comprised of several small communities surrounded by green fields and rugged mountain terrain.

One of the town’s most popular destinations is the Blue Mountain Ski Resort. Find ski runs suitable for all levels of skiers and go ice skating, snowshoeing and tobogganing. In the summer months, enjoy zip-line tours, cable car rides, golfing and mountain biking. Shop, dine and sample après-ski entertainment at the Blue Mountain Village. Discover more snow and mountain-based activities at the Alpine Ski Club and Craigleith Ski Club.

Blue Mountains incorporates a glorious stretch of coastline on the southern shores of Georgian Bay. Christie Beach, Northwinds Beach and the private Blue Mountain Beach are good places to visit for kayaking, sailing, swimming and many other watersports. After a few hours of beach activity, stroll along the streets of Thornbury, a waterfront community home to antique stores, art galleries and fashion boutiques.

Explore the area with a vigorous hike or bike ride. Trek over hills and through deep valleys on the Bruce Trail and stop at viewpoints to admire the vistas of Georgian Bay. Go on the 21-mile (34-kilometer) Georgian Trail that passes beaches, rivers, nature reserves and several picnic areas.

Take pleasure in more leisurely pursuits. Fish for trout at the Peasemarsh Nature Preserve and search for millennia-old fossils in Craigleath Provincial Park. Learn about the cultural and natural history of Blue Mountains at the Craigleith Heritage Depot. Play at one of the many golf courses dotted along the coastline.

Blue Mountains is approximately a 2-hour drive north of Toronto. Get around the town via rented car or bike, or by bus and taxi. Stay overnight at hotels, guesthouses, mountain lodges and camping grounds.

With beaches, countryside, mountains and ski resorts, there is always something to do and see at Blue Mountains, no matter what time of year you visit.

Beautiful as ever. Always look forward to visiting the Blue Mountains. Recommend to visit in February and NOT around Family Day weekend. Parking was a nightmare to find and the line-ups can be long to board the lifts/grab ski rentals.
