Travel Guide
Fredericton showing a garden
Explore the grand government buildings, historic military barracks and towering churches that make up the skyline of New Brunswick’s riverside capital.

Discover Canada’s early military history in Fredericton, where heritage garrisons still border the city and are patrolled by actors dressed up in period military garb. As the seat of New Brunswick’s provincial government, Fredericton features stately architecture and a historic cityscape ideal for walking tours. When you’ve learned about the city’s history, admire its natural beauty on the banks of the St. John River.

Fredericton is centered around the Historic Garrison District, just south of the river. British troops were held here between 1784 and 1869 and the city has maintained its original garrison buildings to this day. Start at the visitor center of the magnificent red-brick City Hall. Walk along the river to Officers’ Square, where a spectacular changing-of-the-guard ceremony happens twice daily during summer.

Find the buildings that house New Brunswick’s provincial government in Fredericton’s scenic riverfront region. The Old Government House is located west of town. Tour the grand mid-19th-century building and see the office of New Brunswick’s lieutenant governor.

Head east of the city center to visit the seat of New Brunswick’s legislative branch, the Legislative Assembly Building. This palace-like building, defined by its octagonal tower, has held New Brunswick’s assembly since 1882. Book your tour of the interior in advance. Visit the nearby Christ Church Cathedral and see its spire rising 198 feet (60.3 meters) above the river.

Start exploring Fredericton’s outdoor attractions by visiting Odell Park. This heavily wooded park in the city center features 10 miles (16 kilometers) of trails.

Scenic St. John River can be discovered in a variety of ways. Tour  52.8 miles (85 kilometers) of riverside trails by bicycle. Rent a kayak or paddleboat and let the river give you a tour of the region.

Fredericton is about an 80-minute drive northwest of Saint John, the largest city in New Brunswick. You can also fly into Fredericton airport from most major Canadian cities. Complete your trip to New Brunswick with a glimpse of its government in Fredericton.
