“Very nice hotel”

Great Breakfast, good location and only 5 minutes away from a train stop. Ten minutes away from great night life. Ten minutes away from the Hard Rock Cafe. Under rennovation but will be done by Dec 2011.

“Great Hotel”

Most everyone working at the hotel was very friendly and anxious to be of service, offering suggestions, maps, etc. Because the hotel is under renovation its a bit inconvenient but overall I think they are making the best of it. All the attractions and things to see are within a couple of miles for walking or blocks for the underground and a bus goes by right in front. The breakfast buffet is super and overall we had a wonderful stay.

“Wonderful & Affordable Stockholm Hotel”

Although the reviews of the Birger Jarl were a bit mixed, I decided to try it and was extremely pleased. The hotel is currently being renovated but that caused only minimal inconveniences (i.e. the front desk is temporarily located in the restaurant). The room was more spacious that I had expected after reading reviews of other Scandinavian hotels. It was recently renovated and very clean. The breakfast buffet is excellent and the hotel staff friendly and helpful. On the map it looks a bit far from downtown and all the attractions but it's not. It's a 10 or 15 minute walk or 5 minute ride on the #2 bus which stops 1/2 block from the hotel. The area around the hotel is quiet and residential. Check out nearby Odengatan for great cafes and restaurants. This hotel was an excellent deal.

Area recommendations
Odenplan and Odengatan which are near the hotel have lots of dining choices and it doesn't feel touristy. The old town (Gamla Stan) has plenty of charm. Some of the streets are mobbed with tourists but it's still possible to find a quiet cafe to have a decent lunch. The City Hall is also definitely worth a visit.
Getting around
Buy the Stockholm card. It entitles you to free entry to numerous museums and other sites as well as unlimited transportation. There's no thinking involved, if you see a site and want to visit you just go in. Also it's easier to cover more territory by jumping on the subway or bus.

“Would definitely stay here again.”

Wonderful hotel, friendly and helpful staff, nicely furnished rooms, very comfy beds, excellent breakfasts. The only thing I could complain about was the renovations. Workers would begin construction early, but I was informed that there was remodeling taking place before I booked the hotel so I really can't hold that against them. Aside from that, excellent! I will definitely stay there again... after their renovations are complete.

Area recommendations
This was my first time in Stockholm and I found ever area I explored very interesting and felt safe. We went mostly to museums and shopping areas; Djurgarden, Normalm, Östermalm and where the hotel is located, Vasastaden. Also Gamla Stan, the old town. The hotel is about a 10-15 walk from the downtown shopping areas and the waterfront, we found this great as we enjoyed the walks to see the sights and were able to return to a very quiet neighborhood to sleep (mid-summer with the window open).

“Beware of renovations”

Renovations started June 7, after we reserved. They advertise that they will be done by November. The staff will do everything they can to make up for the issues arising from the renos. We checked in late afyer a dekayed flight. The renos above us started at 6:30 am, with drills and pipe work.....after advising the front desk, they informed us that work anywhere was not to start until 8am. They offerred to move us and we accepted. They did all the luggage move while we were out and about to a quiet room. They have people standing everywhere to make sure you can go to where you need to be as the front desk and the dining area have all been moved. They even added colours to decorate the corridors along the construction ways. I think this is a great hotel with great service, but we did not get the chance to appreciate itbecause of the renos. I would have like to know rhe hotel was u der renovations during my stay in Stockholm....

Area recommendations
Gamla Stan. Shopping districts (NK, PUB, pedestrain malls). Do NOT go on the hop on hop off. I have done many of those throughout the world and this is the first time I see a very disfunctional service.
Getting there
Taxis better for 3 or more. Watch very carefully for advetised rates at the airport and hotel. The rate will vary by as much as $30can per ride!

“Tiny and depressing rooms”

The hotel is being renovated and that makes the experience even worse. But the real bummer is the size of the hotel rooms. Note that I'm very used to European hotel rooms and know very well that they're smaller. But these rooms can barely fit the bed. The decoration is depressing. Everything is in the same shade of gray. To make it worse, the staff is not especially friendly. The hotel is perfectly clean and safe, and the neighborhood is nice and convenient. But other than that... not a great hotel.

“Gem of a deal”

This hotel is in a quiet neighborhood of Stockholm, boasts modern design, and has attentive, helpful staff. We were there during a renovation--so they upgraded us to a larger room (Superior Double). The room was bigger than many Swedish hotels. The staff offered to book cabs, set up reservations (we were there during a holiday when many businesses closed). Very clean. Also, only a block or so from the metro stop which is only two stops from Central Station.

Area recommendations
I prefer to stay in quieter areas with good access to the main attractions. The neighborhoods north of central Stockholm--Ostermalm in particular--are within 2-3 metro stops of Gamla Stan (the old city).
Getting there
From the Arlanda airport: The Flygbussa buses run every 15 minutes from Arlanda to several stops, including Central Station. There is also the option of taking the Arlanda Express train which costs about double the bus, but halves your travel time. Bus =45 minutes, train=20.
What to pack
Be sure to pack a jacket. It gets cold, even in summer!
Must see
There are many fine museums--take your pick! The Nobel Museum is open late on Tuesdays and it free. Also, the museums on Djurgarden--especially Skansen---are quite good.

“Don't be fooled by "Superior" Room!”

Stockhom is expensive, so you can't complain about that. But this hotel offers either a "Standard" room or a "Superior" room. The superior room supposedly sleeps three and has a sofabed plus either a double bed or twin beds. I was traveling with my dad, so we paid a significant amount extra per night to book a superior room so that if there was a double bed, one of us could use the sofabed. When we got into the room, it was tiny -- maybe about 10x10, with two little twin beds. We would have been okay with two little twin beds, if we had paid the lower price. I went back down to reception and tried to explain the issue. The receptionist was very confused and said that no, all of their rooms are the same size and that the "Superior" room just has free (non-alcoholic) drinks in the fridge, some little slippers to use, and extra shampoos. For that much extra a night?!?!? I don't know whether this is Expedia's mistake or false advertising by the hotel, but I hope nobody else gets fooled into paying the extra money. That said, it has a very good and full breakfast included in the room rate. Also, for a hotel, the gym is pretty good. The hotel is a little away from the downtown but it is in an area with a lot of cool bars and restaurants. I'd say downtown is about a 15-minute walk, not too bad.

“Excellent choice in Stockholm”

We were extremely pleased with our stay at the Hotel Birger Jarl. It was our best hotel choice in Scandinavia. The location isn't the most central, but it is an easy 10 minute walk to the Old Town area. Our rooms were small as are most in Scandinavia, but they were clean and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent with everything you could possibly want. The front desk staff is pleasant and helpful.
